### **Product Introduction: ASTM A514 Grade B High-Strength Quenched & Tempered Alloy Steel Plate**
**Product Overview**
ASTM A514 Grade B is a premium-grade, quenched and tempered alloy steel plate offering an exceptional combination of ultra-high strength and good toughness. Designed for the most demanding structural applications, it provides a minimum yield strength of **100 ksi (690 MPa)** in thicknesses up to and including 19 mm (0.75 inches). Grade B is the most commonly specified grade within the A514 family and is particularly valued in applications where maximizing load capacity while minimizing weight is critical, such in mobile equipment and heavy machinery.

**Key Product Characteristics**
1. **Ultra-High Strength:** The 100 ksi yield strength enables significant weight reduction and performance enhancement in structural designs.
2. **Excellent Weldability:** Despite its high strength, it is formulated for good weldability using appropriate procedures. **Low-hydrogen welding practices are mandatory.**
3. **Superior Toughness:** The quenched and tempered microstructure, often with boron addition, provides excellent impact resistance and fracture toughness, even at low service temperatures.
4. **Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance:** The inclusion of Copper and Nickel offers approximately **twice the corrosion resistance** of standard carbon steel like ASTM A36.

* **Bridge Engineering:** For critical, weight-sensitive sections in movable bridges or where high fatigue resistance is needed.
**Processing & Fabrication Notes**
* **Welding (CRITICAL):** Requires strict low-hydrogen protocols (SMAW: E11018; SAW, FCAW, GMAW with appropriate filler). **Preheating (typically 200-400°F / 93-204°C)** is essential to prevent hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC). Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is often recommended for thick sections or highly restrained joints.
* **Cutting:** Plasma, laser, and abrasive waterjet cutting are excellent. Oxy-fuel cutting is possible but may create a hardened heat-affected zone (HAZ) that requires grinding before welding.
* **Machining:** Machinability rating is lower than mild steel. Requires rigid setups, positive rake carbide tooling, adequate power, and coolants.
