While sharing the identical chemical composition with Grade 5 Class 1, the **“Class 2”** designation is critical: it specifies that the material is supplied in the **Normalized and Tempered (N&T) heat treatment condition** by the steel mill. This pre-conditioning delivers a refined, homogeneous microstructure, resulting in superior and more consistent mechanical properties, particularly enhanced toughness and strength, compared to the as-rolled Class 1 condition. This material is the preferred choice for critical components where **reliable performance, improved impact resistance, and greater design certainty** are required, especially in severe service environments of the petrochemical and power industries. --- #### **1. Key International Standards** * **Primary Material Standard:** **ASTM A387/A387M** - Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Alloy Steel, Chromium-Molybdenum. * **Common Supplementary Standards:** * **ASTM A20/A20M:** Standard Specification for General Requirements for Steel Plates for Pressure Vessels. * **ASME Section II, Part A:** The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code adopts this material as **SA-387 Grade 5 Class 2**. * **EN 10028-2:** The comparable European standard is **P5** (1.7362), typically supplied in a condition equivalent to N&T. --- #### **2. Chemical Composition (Weight %, ASTM A387)** *Identical to Grade 5 Class 1.* | Element | Composition (%) | | :--- | :--- | | Carbon (C) | 0.15 max | | Manganese (Mn) | 0.30 - 0.60 | | Phosphorus (P), max | 0.035 | | Sulfur (S), max | 0.035 | | Silicon (Si) | 0.50 max | | Chromium (Cr) | 4.00 - 6.00 | | Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.45 - 0.65 | *Note: The 4-6% Chromium content provides enhanced oxidation and sulfidation resistance.* --- #### **3. Mechanical & Physical Properties (For Class 2, N&T Condition)** *Note the improved minimum yield strength compared to Class 1.* * **Tensile Strength:** **415 - 585 MPa** (60,000 - 85,000 psi) * **Yield Strength (min):** **240 MPa** (35,000 psi) *[Higher than Class 1's 205 MPa min.]* * **Elongation in 2 in. (50 mm) (min):** 18% * **Hardness (Typical):** Approximately 170-220 HB * **Impact Toughness:** Typically exhibits better and more consistent Charpy V-Notch (CVN) impact values than Class 1 due to the normalized and tempered microstructure. * **Physical Properties (At Room Temperature):** * **Density:** 7.83 g/cm³ (0.283 lb/in³) * **Modulus of Elasticity:** 200 GPa (29 x 10⁶ psi) * **Thermal Conductivity:** ~ 37 W/m·K * **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion:** ~ 11.5 x 10⁻⁶ /K (20-100°C) --- #### **4. Key Characteristics & Advantages (vs. Class 1)** * **Guaranteed Enhanced Properties:** The mill-applied N&T treatment ensures the material meets the higher minimum yield strength (240 MPa vs. 205 MPa) and provides a more uniform property profile throughout the plate thickness and across the production heat. * **Superior Toughness:** The normalized and tempered structure offers significantly improved notch toughness and ductility at both room and lower temperatures, reducing the risk of brittle fracture. This is crucial for large, thick-walled pressure vessels. * **Improved Weldability & Fabrication Consistency:** The homogeneous and softened N&T structure can simplify subsequent fabrication. While pre-heat and PWHT remain mandatory, the starting condition is more predictable. * **Microstructural Stability:** The N&T process produces a stable microstructure of tempered bainite or ferrite-pearlite, which is optimal for long-term high-temperature service and resists degradation. * **Reduced Fabricator Heat Treatment Complexity:** For applications where the final component does not require extensive hot forming, the fabricator may only need to perform a **Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT)** to relieve stresses, rather than a full re-normalizing cycle (unless the weld thermal cycle severely alters the base metal properties). --- #### **5. Product Applications** Grade 5 Class 2 is used in the same demanding sectors as Class 1, but is often specified for more critical or thicker-section components: * **Petrochemical & Refining:** * **Thick-walled Reactors and Separators** in catalytic cracking and hydrocracking units. * **High-Pressure, High-Temperature Heat Exchanger** shells. * Critical piping and headers in sulfur recovery plants. * **Power Generation:** * **Steam Drums and Headers** in fossil fuel boilers (where high toughness is mandated by code). * High-temperature sections of **Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs)**. * **General Pressure Vessels:** For services involving thermal cycling or where low-temperature start-up conditions necessitate higher impact toughness. --- #### **6. Fabrication Notes** * **Welding:** Similar to Class 1. Requires strict procedure qualification. Use low-hydrogen practices with matching B5-classified filler metals (e.g., AWS A5.5 E80XX-B5). **Pre-heating** (150-250°C / 300-480°F) is essential. * **Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT):** **Mandatory.** Must be performed at temperatures **below the original tempering temperature** used by the mill (typically in the range of 650-730°C / 1200-1350°F) to avoid over-tempering and loss of strength. The exact temperature must be controlled per the qualified welding procedure. * **Forming:** Can be cold or hot formed. However, if hot forming exceeds certain temperature limits (e.g., above 925°C / 1700°F), a full re-normalizing and tempering heat treatment may be required after forming to restore the original properties. **In summary, ASTM A387 Grade 5 Class 2 represents the premium supply condition for Grade 5 alloy steel. By specifying Class 2, designers and fabricators procure a material with guaranteed, optimized mechanical properties and microstructure from the mill, providing an additional margin of safety, reliability, and fabricability for the most critical high-temperature pressure vessel applications.** -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ASTM A387 Alloy Steel, Grade 5, Class 2 Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <6002 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ASTM A387 Alloy Steel, Grade 5, Class 2 Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
