## **Product Datasheet: AISI 1020 Steel, Cold Rolled, Sheet/Strip**
---
### **1. Product Overview**
AISI 1020 is a widely used low-carbon steel grade, celebrated for its excellent balance of strength, ductility, and weldability. In its **Cold Rolled (CR)** condition, the hot-rolled coil is further processed at room temperature through a series of rolling mills. This cold reduction process significantly improves surface finish, dimensional accuracy, and mechanical properties compared to its hot-rolled counterpart. AISI 1020 CR is a premier choice for applications demanding a smooth, aesthetically pleasing surface, tight tolerances, and enhanced strength for fabrication.
### **2. Key Features & Benefits of Cold Rolling**
* **Superior Surface Finish:** Produces a smooth, clean, and shiny surface (often referred to as a "commercial" or "bright" finish), ideal for painting, plating, or visible applications.
* **Excellent Dimensional Accuracy & Flatness:** Maintains very tight thickness tolerances and superior flatness, crucial for precision parts and stamping.
* **Enhanced Mechanical Properties:** The cold working (strain hardening) process increases tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness while reducing ductility slightly compared to the annealed state.
* **Good Formability:** Despite being stronger, it retains good ductility for bending, drawing, and moderate forming operations, especially in the "skin-passed" or milder tempers.
* **Consistent Quality:** Offers uniform grain structure and mechanical properties throughout the coil.
### **3. Standard Chemical Composition (Weight %)**
| Element | AISI 1020 Specification | Typical Analysis |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | 0.18 - 0.23 | 0.20 |
| **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.30 - 0.60 | 0.45 |
| **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.040 | 0.010 |
| **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.050 | 0.025 |
| **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Balance |
### **4. Typical Mechanical Properties (Cold Rolled, Full Hard or Hard Temper)**
*Properties vary significantly based on the degree of cold reduction (temper). Below represents a common "Full Hard" or "Hard" temper.*
| Property | Metric Value | Imperial Value |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Tensile Strength** | 550 - 620 MPa | 80,000 - 90,000 psi |
| **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | 510 - 580 MPa | 74,000 - 84,000 psi |
| **Elongation in 50 mm (2 in)** | 5% - 10% | 5% - 10% |
| **Hardness** | 85 - 100 HRB | 85 - 100 HRB |
| **Modulus of Elasticity** | 190 - 210 GPa | 27,500 - 30,500 ksi |
**Note on Tempers:** AISI 1020 CR is commonly available in various tempers (e.g., **Full Hard, Half Hard, Quarter Hard, Skin-Passed**) to suit different forming needs. Softer tempers (like Skin-Passed) offer lower strength but much higher elongation (15-25%) for deeper drawing.
### **5. Physical Properties**
| Property | Value |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Density** | 7.87 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³) |
| **Melting Point** | ~1520°C (2768°F) |
### **6. Primary Applications**
AISI 1020 Cold Rolled steel is fundamental to manufacturing across numerous industries:
* **Automotive:** Non-structural body panels, brackets, clutch plates, supports, and trim components.
* **Appliances:** Housings, panels, chassis, and internal components for washers, dryers, and refrigerators.
* **Furniture & Office Equipment:** Filing cabinets, desk frames, shelving, and mechanical parts.
* **General Fabrication & Enclosures:** Electrical cabinets, machine guards, covers, and frames requiring a good finish.
* **Hardware & Consumer Goods:** Tools, fixtures, fasteners, and various stamped or formed metal goods.
* **Base Material for Further Processing:** Often used as the substrate for galvanizing (becomes SGCC) or other coatings.
### **7. Conforming International Standards**
This product is equivalent to or meets the requirements of the following standards:
* **AISI (USA):** AISI 1020
* **ASTM (USA):** **ASTM A366/A366M** (Standard Specification for Steel, Carbon, Cold-Rolled Sheet, Commercial Quality). Also meets requirements of **ASTM A1008** for structural quality.
* **SAE (USA):** SAE J403, SAE J412
* **UNS (USA):** UNS G10200
* **DIN (Germany):** 1.0402 / C22 (Close equivalent)
* **JIS (Japan):** JIS S20C (Similar grade)
* **ISO (International):** ISO 3574 (Commercial and drawing qualities)
### **8. Fabrication Notes**
* **Forming/Bending:** Performance depends heavily on temper. **Full Hard** material has limited formability and may require annealing for complex bends. **Half Hard** or softer is suitable for most bending.
* **Machining:** It machines reasonably well, though its cold-worked hardness can cause more tool wear than annealed material. Use sharp tools and appropriate feeds/speeds.
* **Welding:** **Excellent weldability** using all common methods (SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, Resistance). For full-hard material, welding will anneal the heat-affected zone, causing a localized loss of strength.
* **Surface Treatment:** The smooth, clean surface is ideal for painting, powder coating, plating, or anodizing with minimal preparation.
### **9. Typical Availability**
* **Form:** Coils, sheets, or blanks.
* **Thickness:** Typically available from about **0.4 mm up to 3.2 mm (0.016" - 0.125")**, with wider ranges from specialty mills.
* **Width:** Standard mill widths, often slit to customer specifications.
* **Surface Finish:** Bright, matte, or with a specific roughness (e.g., for painting).
---
**Disclaimer:** The information provided is for reference purposes. Mechanical properties are highly dependent on the specific temper and gauge. Users must select the appropriate temper (e.g., Hard, Half Hard) based on their forming and strength requirements and should conduct their own tests to verify suitability for specific applications.
