### **Product Introduction: ASTM A514 Grade C High-Strength Quenched & Tempered Alloy Steel Plate**
**Product Overview**
ASTM A514 Grade C is a high-strength quenched and tempered alloy steel plate designed for structural applications requiring exceptional strength-to-weight ratios. It provides a minimum yield strength of **100 ksi (690 MPa)** in thicknesses up to 19 mm (0.75 inches) and features enhanced carbon content for applications where maximum hardness and wear resistance are prioritized. This grade is commonly specified where Grade B or A may not provide sufficient hardness, particularly in abrasive environments.
**Key International Standards**
* **Primary Specification:** ASTM A514/A514M - *Standard Specification for High-Yield-Strength, Quenched and Tempered Alloy Steel Plate, Suitable for Welding*
* **Dimensional Standards:** ASTM A6/A6M - *Standard Specification for General Requirements for Rolled Structural Steel Bars, Plates, Shapes, and Sheet Piling*
* **Common International Equivalents:**
- **EN Standard:** EN 10025-6 Grade S690QL (similar strength class)
- **JIS Standard:** JIS G3128 SHY685 (comparable performance grade)
- **ISO Standard:** ISO 4950-3 Grade EQ 690 (equivalent quality level)
**Chemical Composition (Heat Analysis, % Maximum)**
| Element | Content (%) | Element | Content (%) |
|---------|-------------|---------|-------------|
| Carbon (C) | 0.10-0.20 | Vanadium (V) | 0.03-0.08 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.70-1.00 | Titanium (Ti) | 0.01-0.03 |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.035 max | Zirconium (Zr) | 0.05-0.15 |
| Sulfur (S) | 0.040 max | Boron (B) | 0.001-0.005 |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.40-0.80 | Copper (Cu) | 0.15-0.50 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 0.40-0.65 | Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.15-0.25 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 0.25 max | | |
*Note: The carbon content range provides balanced strength and weldability characteristics.*
**Physical & Mechanical Properties (Thickness ≤ 19 mm)**
* **Yield Strength (Minimum):** 100 ksi (690 MPa)
* **Tensile Strength:** 110-130 ksi (760-895 MPa)
* **Elongation in 2 inches:** 18% minimum
* **Reduction of Area:** 40% minimum
* **Hardness:** 235-293 HBW (typical)
* **Modulus of Elasticity:** 29,000 ksi (200 GPa)
* **Poisson's Ratio:** 0.29
* **Density:** 0.284 lb/in³ (7.85 g/cm³)
* **Thermal Conductivity:** 28.5 W/m·K at 100°C
* **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion:** 11.5 × 10⁻⁶/°C (20-100°C)
**Special Characteristics**
1. **Balanced Strength-Toughness Ratio:** Optimized chemistry provides excellent combination of high strength and adequate toughness
2. **Improved Wear Resistance:** Higher carbon content compared to some other grades offers better abrasion resistance
3. **Good Weldability:** Designed for weldability with proper procedures despite high strength
4. **Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance:** Copper content provides approximately 2x better corrosion resistance than carbon steel
**Primary Applications**
* **Construction Equipment:** Excavator buckets, bulldozer blades, crane components
* **Mining Machinery:** Shovel components, crusher parts, conveyor system supports
* **Material Handling:** Heavy-duty forklift masts, crane runways, lifting equipment
* **Transportation:** Truck chassis components, trailer frames, heavy-haul equipment
* **Industrial Equipment:** Press frames, machine bases, high-stress structural members
* **Infrastructure:** Bridge components (particularly movable bridges), transmission towers
**Processing Guidelines**
* **Welding:** Requires low-hydrogen electrodes (E11018 type). Recommended preheat: 200-250°F (93-121°C) for thicknesses up to 19 mm
* **Cutting:** Suitable for plasma, laser, and waterjet cutting. Oxy-fuel cutting requires post-cutting edge preparation
* **Machining:** Requires carbide tooling with moderate feeds and speeds. Positive rake angles recommended
* **Heat Treatment:** Supplied in quenched and tempered condition - should not be re-heat treated without proper metallurgical guidance
**Quality Assurance**
* Supplied with certified mill test reports
* Subject to mechanical testing including tension, hardness, and Charpy V-notch impact testing
* Ultrasonic testing available per supplementary requirements
**Comparison with Other Grades**
Compared to Grade A, Grade C offers better hardenability in thicker sections. Compared to Grade B, it has different alloying balance making it suitable for specific fabrication requirements. The 100 ksi yield strength is maintained across Grades A, B, and C up to 19 mm thickness.
**Storage & Handling**
* Store in clean, dry conditions to prevent corrosion
* Use proper lifting equipment to prevent damage to plate edges
* Maintain identification markings through fabrication process
**Disclaimer**
This technical information is for reference purposes. Specific application suitability should be verified through appropriate engineering analysis. Always consult the latest ASTM specifications and certified material test reports for procurement and fabrication purposes. Welding procedures should be qualified according to applicable codes (AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, etc.).
