### **Product Introduction: Crucible CPM® REX® 20® (HS) High-Speed Steel**
Crucible CPM REX 20 (HS) is a premium, cobalt-bearing high-speed steel (HSS) produced via the advanced Crucible Particle Metallurgy (CPM) process. It represents a significant evolution beyond the standard M2 and M35 grades, engineered specifically to deliver **exceptional hot hardness (red hardness) and superior cutting performance in high-temperature, high-speed machining applications**. The "HS" designation underscores its primary role as a **High-Speed** cutting tool material.
The CPM process ensures a fine, uniform distribution of hard carbides within a homogeneous matrix. This microstructure eliminates the coarse carbide segregation common in conventional cast alloys, resulting in improved transverse toughness, superior grindability, excellent dimensional stability during heat treatment, and enhanced resistance to edge chipping. REX 20 is the go-to material for tools that must maintain a sharp cutting edge under severe thermal and mechanical stress.

### **1. Chemical Composition (Weight %)**
Its composition is strategically balanced with high cobalt and vanadium to maximize high-temperature performance.
| **Element** | **Carbon (C)** | **Tungsten (W)** | **Molybdenum (Mo)** | **Chromium (Cr)** | **Vanadium (V)** | **Cobalt (Co)** |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Content** | 1.30 | 6.25 | 5.00 | 4.25 | 2.00 | 9.00 |
| **Role** | Provides base hardness and forms carbides for wear resistance. | Contributes to hot hardness and abrasion resistance. | Primary agent for deep hardenability and hot hardness; complements tungsten. | Ensures hardenability and enhances wear/oxidation resistance. | Forms hard vanadium carbides (VC) for enhanced abrasion resistance at the cutting edge. | **Key Differentiator.** Significantly increases hot hardness by strengthening the steel matrix at elevated temperatures, allowing higher cutting speeds. |
*Note: Iron (Fe) constitutes the remainder. Sulfur (S) is kept very low.*
---
### **2. Physical & Mechanical Properties**
*Typical properties after proper heat treatment to a working hardness of 66-68 HRC.*
* **Density:** 8.20 g/cm³ (0.296 lb/in³)
* **Modulus of Elasticity:** ~215 GPa (31.2 x 10⁶ psi)
* **Thermal Conductivity:** Moderate for a HSS. Cobalt improves heat transfer to some extent.
* **Hot Hardness (Red Hardness):** **Outstanding.** The high cobalt content allows REX 20 to maintain a hardness above 62 HRC at temperatures exceeding **600°C (1110°F)**, which is superior to M2, M35, and even M42 grades. This enables significantly higher cutting speeds.
* **Hardness (Typical Working Range):** **65 - 68 HRC.** Commonly applied at **66-67 HRC** to balance extreme hardness with adequate toughness.
* **Abrasion Resistance:** **Very Good.** Enhanced by the combination of higher carbon, vanadium content, and the ability to achieve a very high final hardness. Superior to standard cobalt HSS like M35.
* **Toughness:** **Moderate.** The high cobalt and carbon content inherently reduce toughness compared to non-cobalt grades like PM M2. However, the CPM process provides **better and more consistent toughness than conventional cast equivalents** (like T15), making it less prone to catastrophic failure.
* **Grindability:** **Fair to Difficult.** The high volume of hard vanadium carbides and high final hardness make grinding more challenging than for M2 or M35. It requires sharp, friable aluminum oxide wheels or preferably CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) abrasives.
---
### **3. Heat Treatment**
Precise heat treatment is critical to realize the full potential of REX 20.
* **Annealing:** Heat to 870-900°C (1600-1650°F), slow cool. Typical annealed hardness: 260-300 HB.
* **Stress Relieving:** 650-700°C (1200-1290°F), then slow cool.
* **Preheating:** **Mandatory.** Use a double preheat cycle: First at 540-650°C (1000-1200°F), then at 815-870°C (1500-1600°F).
* **Austenitizing:** **1190-1220°C (2175-2230°F).** A precise temperature is crucial. Higher temperatures maximize hot hardness and wear resistance but further reduce toughness.
* **Quenching:** Air quench or, preferably, controlled gas/pressure quenching for optimal dimensional stability. Oil quenching is possible but not recommended for complex tools.
* **Tempering:** **Mandatory Multiple Tempers.** Temper immediately after quenching. **Minimum of three tempers**, each for 2 hours, is standard. Typical tempering range: **540-565°C (1000-1050°F)**. The steel exhibits a strong secondary hardening response.
* **Sub-Zero Treatment:** Highly recommended between quenching and the first temper to minimize retained austenite, ensuring maximum hardness, dimensional stability, and thermal conductivity in service.
---
### **4. Key Applications**
CPM REX 20 is designed for the most demanding high-speed and high-temperature machining operations.
* **High-Performance Cutting Tools:** Gear hobs, broaches, shaper cutters, and form-relieved milling cutters for machining high-temperature alloys (e.g., Inconel, Waspaloy), high-strength steels, and hardened materials.
* **High-Speed Machining (HSM):** End mills and milling cutters for operations where very high spindle speeds and feed rates generate extreme heat at the cutting edge.
* **Precision Finishing Tools:** Tools where maintaining a sharp edge and tight tolerances at high operating temperatures is paramount.
* **Demanding Forming Tools:** Punches and dies for hot or warm forming operations where die wear and thermal softening are concerns.
* **Specialty Knives:** High-end industrial cutting blades for abrasive synthetic materials.
---
### **5. International Standards & Cross-References**
CPM REX 20 is a proprietary grade, often compared to and surpassing standard cobalt HSS grades.
* **AISI/SAE:** **T15** is the closest conventional equivalent in terms of composition (high cobalt, high vanadium). REX 20 can be considered a PM-enhanced, superior-performance version of T15.
* **ISO:** **HS12-1-5-5** (a classification for high-cobalt, high-vanadium HSS).
* **European (EN):** No direct equivalent. Compositionally close to some proprietary high-cobalt grades like **1.3265** variants.
* **Japanese (JIS):** **SKH10** is a similar high-cobalt, high-vanadium grade.
* **Common Trade Names/Comparisons:** Often referred to as a "Super T15" or "PM T15." Competitor analogs include Bohler S390 and similar PM super HSS grades.
---
### **6. Advantages & Limitations**
**Advantages:**
* **Exceptional Hot Hardness:** Enables higher cutting speeds and productivity than most other HSS grades.
* **Superior Wear Resistance at High Temperature:** Maintains its cutting edge longer under thermal duress.
* **CPM Benefits:** Enhanced toughness, grindability (relative to cast T15), and dimensional stability compared to its conventional counterparts.
* **Excellent for Difficult-to-Machine Materials:** Ideal for aerospace superalloys and tool steels.
**Limitations:**
* **Lower Toughness:** Not suitable for applications with high shock or intermittent cutting. More brittle than M2 or M4.
* **High Cost:** Due to significant cobalt and vanadium content and PM processing.
* **Difficult Grinding:** Requires proper equipment and expertise.
* **Complex Heat Treatment:** Demands precise control to avoid embrittlement or under-performance.
---
**In summary, Crucible CPM REX 20 (HS) is a top-tier, cobalt-enhanced high-speed steel designed for peak performance in the most thermally challenging cutting environments.** It is a specialist material that trades off some toughness for unmatched ability to retain hardness and cutting ability at extreme temperatures, offering a significant productivity advantage in specific, demanding applications.
