As a premium powder metallurgy (PM) version of the classic AISI T15 alloy, it combines the legendary high-cobalt, high-vanadium chemistry with Crucible's proprietary CPM (Crucible Particle Metallurgy) manufacturing process. This synergy produces a cutting tool material with **exceptional hot hardness, superior wear resistance, and dramatically improved toughness and grindability** compared to conventional ingot-cast T15. The CPM process eliminates the coarse carbide segregation and banding inherent in conventionally produced T15, creating a homogeneous microstructure with finely distributed carbides. This transformation addresses the traditional limitations of T15—brittleness and poor grindability—while amplifying its strengths. REX T15 (HS) is engineered for the most demanding high-temperature machining applications where tools must maintain cutting integrity under extreme thermal and abrasive conditions, particularly in machining superalloys, hardened steels, and other difficult-to-machine materials. --- ## **1. Chemical Composition (Weight %)** The composition adheres to the classic AISI T15 specification but benefits from tighter compositional control and homogeneity through PM processing. | **Element** | **Carbon (C)** | **Tungsten (W)** | **Molybdenum (Mo)** | **Chromium (Cr)** | **Vanadium (V)** | **Cobalt (Co)** | |-------------|----------------|------------------|---------------------|-------------------|------------------|-----------------| | **Content** | 1.50 - 1.60 | 11.75 - 13.00 | — | 4.00 - 4.75 | 4.50 - 5.25 | 4.75 - 5.25 | | **Role** | High carbon content enables maximum carbide formation, providing exceptional hardness and wear resistance potential. | Primary contributor to hot hardness (red hardness) through solid solution strengthening and stable carbide formation. | Typically minimal in true T15; tungsten provides the primary high-temperature performance. | Ensures deep hardenability and provides moderate oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. | Forms extremely hard vanadium carbides (VC), providing exceptional abrasion resistance at both room and elevated temperatures. | Enhances hot hardness by strengthening the ferrite matrix, allowing tools to maintain hardness at very high cutting temperatures. | *Note: Iron (Fe) constitutes the remainder. Some modern interpretations of T15 may include small amounts of Molybdenum, but the classic specification is tungsten-dominated.* --- ## **2. Physical & Mechanical Properties** *Typical properties after proper heat treatment to 66-68 HRC.* * **Density:** 8.30 - 8.50 g/cm³ (0.300 - 0.307 lb/in³) – higher than most HSS due to high tungsten content. * **Modulus of Elasticity:** ~215 GPa (31.2 × 10⁶ psi) * **Thermal Conductivity:** Moderate; cobalt content aids somewhat in heat transfer. * **Hot Hardness (Red Hardness):** **Outstanding.** Maintains hardness above 62 HRC at temperatures exceeding **600°C (1110°F)**. This is a benchmark property of T15 chemistry, preserved and made more reliable via PM processing. * **Hardness (Typical Working Range):** **65 - 69 HRC.** Most commonly used at **66-68 HRC**. * **Abrasion Resistance:** **Exceptional.** The combination of very high vanadium (≥4.5%) and carbon content creates a large volume of ultra-hard vanadium carbides, giving it wear resistance superior to nearly all other high-speed steels. * **Toughness:** **Good for its category (PM version).** This is the key improvement over conventional T15. The CPM process provides **significantly higher and more consistent transverse toughness**, greatly reducing the risk of chipping and catastrophic failure compared to the notoriously brittle ingot T15. * **Grindability:** **Fair (PM version).** While still challenging due to the high vanadium carbide volume, CPM REX T15 is **notably easier to grind than conventional T15** thanks to its finer, more uniform carbide structure. CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) or advanced alumina wheels are required. --- ## **3. Heat Treatment** Precise heat treatment is critical. The PM version offers slightly better stability but follows similar principles to conventional T15. * **Annealing:** Heat to 870-900°C (1600-1650°F), slow cool (≤15°C/hr to 600°C). Annealed hardness: 285-341 HB. * **Stress Relieving:** 600-650°C (1110-1200°F), hold 2 hours, furnace cool. * **Preheating:** **Essential.** Double preheat: First at 540-650°C (1000-1200°F), then at 815-870°C (1500-1600°F). * **Austenitizing:** **1205-1240°C (2200-2265°F).** The high tungsten content requires high austenitizing temperatures. Precise control is vital. Typical range: **1220-1230°C (2225-2245°F)**. * **Quenching:** Air quench (for tools/simple shapes) or positive pressure gas quenching (preferred for complex tools/dimensional control). Oil quenching is not recommended. * **Tempering:** **Triple Tempering Required.** Temper immediately after quenching. **Three cycles** at **540-565°C (1005-1050°F)**, for 2 hours each, are standard. Exhibits a strong secondary hardening response. * **Sub-Zero Treatment:** **Highly recommended** (-80°C to -100°C) between quenching and first temper to maximize transformation of retained austenite. --- ## **4. Key Applications** CPM REX T15 (HS) is designed for severe applications where extreme wear and high temperatures defeat other high-speed steels. * **Superalloy Machining:** Broaches, end mills, drills, and turning tools for machining nickel-based and cobalt-based superalloys (Inconel, Hastelloy, Waspaloy) in aerospace and power generation. * **Hard Turning & Milling:** Cutting tools for machining hardened steels (45-65 HRC) where abrasive wear is significant. * **High-Speed Gear Production:** Premium gear hobs for cutting high-strength alloy steels. * **Demanding Form Tools:** Precision form tools and inserts for mass production of abrasive components. * **Specialty Cutting Tools:** Tools for machining abrasive composites, hardened cast irons, and high-temperature alloys. --- ## **5. International Standards & Cross-References** CPM REX T15 is the PM version of the standard AISI T15 grade. * **AISI/SAE:** **T15** * **UNS:** T12015 * **ISO:** **HS12-1-5-5** (Closest equivalent: High Cobalt High Speed Steel) * **European (EN):** **1.3202** (Material number for high-cobalt high-speed steel) * **Japanese (JIS):** **SKH10** (Similar high-cobalt, high-vanadium grade) * **Common Trade Names:** PM T15, CPM T15, Micro-Melt® T15. Often called "Super T15" when referring to the PM version. --- ## **6. Advantages & Limitations** **Advantages of CPM REX T15 over Conventional T15:** * **Greatly Improved Toughness:** The single most important benefit, reducing tool chipping and breakage. * **Enhanced Grindability:** Lower grinding forces, better surface finish, longer wheel life. * **Superior Dimensional Stability:** More predictable heat treatment with less distortion. * **Isotropic Properties:** Uniform performance regardless of orientation. * **Consistent Performance:** Batch-to-batch reliability due to homogeneous microstructure. **General Limitations (Inherent to T15 Chemistry):** * **High Cost:** Due to high tungsten, vanadium, and cobalt content, plus PM processing. * **Density/Weight:** Heavier than molybdenum-based HSS. * **Heat Treatment Sensitivity:** Requires very high, precisely controlled austenitizing temperatures. * **Not a General-Purpose Steel:** Its capabilities are best utilized only in specific, severe applications. --- ## **7. Summary** **Crucible CPM REX T15 (HS) is the definitive modern evolution of a classic high-speed steel champion.** It retains the unmatched hot hardness and wear resistance that made AISI T15 legendary for difficult machining tasks, while Crucible's particle metallurgy technology successfully overcomes its historical weaknesses of brittleness and poor grindability. This results in a tool material that offers exceptional performance, reliability, and tool life in the most extreme cutting environments, making it a premium choice for aerospace, power generation, and other industries where machining the toughest materials is a daily challenge. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Crucible Steel CPM® Rex® T15(HS), AISI T15 High Speed Steel Rex® T15(HS) Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <6956 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Crucible Steel CPM® Rex® T15(HS), AISI T15 High Speed Steel Rex® T15(HS) Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
