# **Product Introduction: Crucible AIRDI® 150 (AISI D2) Tool Steel**
Crucible AIRDI® 150 is a high-carbon, high-chromium, air-hardening tool steel that conforms to the widely recognized AISI D2 specification. It represents a premium-quality, conventional ingot-cast version of this industry-standard workhorse grade, produced with Crucible Industries' rigorous metallurgical controls to ensure consistency and performance. As its name "AIRDI" indicates, it is designed for **air hardening**, which minimizes distortion and quench cracking risks compared to oil-hardening steels, making it suitable for complex tool geometries.
AIRDI® 150 is renowned for its **excellent wear resistance, high compressive strength, and good dimensional stability during heat treatment**. Its performance is derived from a high volume of hard chromium carbides within a hardened martensitic matrix. While it offers good resistance to softening at moderate temperatures, its primary strength lies in room-temperature and cold-work applications. It is the benchmark material for long-run, precision tooling where abrasive wear is the primary failure mode.

## **1. Chemical Composition (Weight %)**
The composition adheres to the classic AISI D2 specification, optimized for carbide formation and hardenability.
| **Element** | **Carbon (C)** | **Chromium (Cr)** | **Molybdenum (Mo)** | **Vanadium (V)** | **Silicon (Si)** | **Manganese (Mn)** |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Content** | 1.55 | 11.50 | 0.80 | 0.90 | 0.30 | 0.40 |
| **Role** | Combines with chromium to form a high volume of hard carbides, providing the foundation for exceptional wear resistance. | Primary alloying element. Provides deep air hardenability, forms massive chromium carbides (Cr₇C₃) for wear resistance, and imparts moderate corrosion resistance. | Enhances hardenability, refines grain structure, and improves toughness. | Forms hard, wear-resistant vanadium carbides (VC), which refine grain size and improve abrasion resistance. | Deoxidizer and solid solution strengthener. Typically kept low in D2. | Aids in deoxidation and contributes to hardenability. |
*Note: Iron (Fe) constitutes the remainder. This composition results in a carbide volume of approximately 12-15%.*

## **2. Physical & Mechanical Properties**
*Typical properties after proper heat treatment to 58-62 HRC.*
* **Density:** 7.70 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³)
* **Modulus of Elasticity:** 210 GPa (30.5 x 10⁶ psi)
* **Thermal Conductivity:** Relatively low, approximately 20 W/m·K at 20°C.
* **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion:** 10.4 x 10⁻⁶/°C (20-200°C)
* **Hardenability:** **Excellent.** Deep air-hardening characteristics; can fully harden in large sections.
* **Hardness (Typical Working Range):** **57 - 62 HRC.** Most commonly used at **58-60 HRC** for an optimal balance of wear resistance and toughness.
* **Abrasion Resistance:** **Excellent.** The high volume of chromium carbides provides outstanding resistance to sliding wear and abrasion, making it a benchmark for cold work tool steels.
* **Toughness:** **Moderate.** Lower than oil-hardening or shock-resistant steels (like O1 or S7). It can be brittle at higher hardnesses and is sensitive to notch effects. Transverse toughness is lower than longitudinal due to carbide banding in ingot-cast material.
* **Dimensional Stability:** **Very Good.** Air hardening results in minimal size change and distortion compared to oil-quenching steels.
* **Corrosion Resistance:** **Fair.** Slightly better than non-chromium tool steels due to its >11% Cr content, but it is not a stainless steel. Will tarnish and rust if not protected.
---
## **3. Heat Treatment**
* **Annealing:** Heat to 870-900°C (1600-1650°F), slow cool at ≤15°C/hr to 600°C. Annealed hardness: 200-240 HB.
* **Stress Relieving:** 650-675°C (1200-1250°F), hold, then slow cool.
* **Preheating:** **Highly Recommended.** Preheat at 790-815°C (1450-1500°F) to minimize thermal shock and distortion.
* **Austenitizing:** **995-1025°C (1825-1875°F).** A common temperature is **1010°C (1850°F)**. Higher temperatures increase dissolved carbon and alloy content, boosting wear resistance and hardness but reducing toughness and increasing retained austenite.
* **Quenching:** **Still or forced air quench.** For maximum dimensional stability, a interrupted air quench to ~540°C (1000°F) followed by still air cooling is effective. **Do not oil quench.**
* **Tempering:** **Mandatory Double Temper.** Temper immediately after quenching. **Two tempers**, each for 2+ hours, are standard. **Typical tempering range: 205-540°C (400-1000°F).**
* For 58-60 HRC: Temper at **480-540°C (900-1000°F)**.
* Avoid prolonged exposure in the 260-425°C (500-800°F) range due to potential secondary hardening embrittlement.
* **Sub-Zero Treatment:** Often recommended after quenching and before tempering to transform retained austenite, especially when austenitized at higher temperatures, improving dimensional stability and wear resistance.
---
## **4. Key Applications**
AIRDI® 150 (D2) is a cornerstone material for long-run, wear-sensitive tooling across multiple industries.
* **Blanking and Forming Dies:** Long-run dies for stamping, punching, and forming sheet metal, especially for abrasive materials.

* **Proven Reliability:** Decades of successful use with well-understood properties and processing.
**Limitations:**
* **Moderate/Low Toughness:** Not suitable for high-impact or severely notched applications.
* **Poor Machinability (Annealed State):** Abrasive carbides make machining difficult, requiring carbide tooling.
* **Difficult Grindability:** Hard carbides can cause grinding challenges and require proper wheel selection.
* **Anisotropic Properties:** In ingot-cast form, properties (especially toughness) vary with direction due to carbide banding.
* **Limited Corrosion Resistance:** Will rust if not protected; not suitable for corrosive environments without plating/coating.
---
## **7. Summary**
**Crucible AIRDI® 150 (AISI D2) is the definitive high-wear, air-hardening tool steel for long-run production tooling.** Its combination of outstanding abrasion resistance, high compressive strength, and stable air-hardening characteristics has made it an indispensable material in stamping, forming, and cutting industries worldwide. While newer powder metallurgy grades offer improved toughness and isotropy, conventional D2 remains a cost-effective and highly capable solution for countless applications where wear is the dominant concern. AIRDI® 150 delivers this proven performance with the quality and consistency expected from Crucible Industries.
