It represents an optimal balance of critical properties for metal cutting tools, offering an excellent combination of **hot hardness, wear resistance, and toughness**. This versatile grade is engineered to deliver superior performance in a wide range of machining applications, particularly where a balance between the abrasion resistance of M2 and the toughness of M7/M10 is required. --- #### **Key Features & Benefits** * **Exceptional Hot Hardness:** Maintains a hard cutting edge at elevated temperatures generated during high-speed machining. * **Superior Abrasion Resistance:** Formulated to withstand wear from tough workpiece materials, extending tool life between regrinds. * **Good Toughness:** Provides greater resistance to chipping and fracture compared to higher-carbon or higher-vanadium HSS grades like M2 or M4, making it suitable for interrupted cuts. * **Excellent Grindability:** Contains moderate vanadium, which offers a favorable balance of wear resistance without the grinding challenges associated with high-vanadium steels. This ensures easier fabrication and resharpening of complex tools. * **Versatile Performance:** A true "all-rounder" grade, effectively machining a broad spectrum of materials, from general-purpose steels to more abrasive alloys. --- #### **Chemical Composition (Typical %, ASTM A600)** | Element | Carbon (C) | Tungsten (W) | Molybdenum (Mo) | Chromium (Cr) | Vanadium (V) | Cobalt (Co) | | :--- | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | | **Content** | 0.80 - 0.90 | 1.40 - 2.10 | 8.00 - 9.50 | 3.50 - 4.50 | 1.00 - 1.35 | - | *(Note: Tatmo™ M1 is a non-cobalt grade. Small amounts of other elements like Silicon and Manganese are present.)* *This composition leverages molybdenum as the primary hardening element, with tungsten and vanadium contributing to secondary hardening, wear resistance, and hot strength.* --- #### **Physical & Mechanical Properties** * **Density:** ~8.0 g/cm³ * **Thermal Conductivity:** Lower than carbon steels, contributing to heat concentration at the cutting edge (a managed characteristic in HSS). * **Hardness (Heat Treated):** Can achieve a working hardness of **63-66 HRC**. * **Red Hardness:** Capable of maintaining cutting performance at temperatures up to approximately **540°C (1000°F)**. * **Abrasion Resistance:** Superior to carbon and low-alloy tool steels; balanced between M2 and tougher M-series grades. --- #### **Heat Treatment** * **Annealing:** Heat to 840-870°C (1550-1600°F), slow cool. Typical annealed hardness: **215-240 HB**. * **Hardening (Austenitizing):** Preheat thoroughly. High-heat at **1190-1220°C (2175-2225°F)**, followed by quenching in oil, salt, or air (depending on section size and furnace type). * **Tempering:** **Double or triple temper** immediately after quenching. Standard tempering range is **540-595°C (1000-1100°F)**. Hardness after tempering typically targets 64-65 HRC. Each temper cycle should be a minimum of two hours. --- #### **International Standards & Equivalent Grades** Latrobe Tatmo™ M1 conforms to and is recognized under the following international specifications: | Standard | Grade Designation | | :--- | :--- | | **ASTM (USA)** | A600 M1 (UNS T11301) | | **ISO (International)** | HS1-9-1 (ISO 4957) | | **DIN (Germany)** | 1.3345 / S 1-9-1 | | **W-Nr. (Germany)** | 1.3345 | | **JIS (Japan)** | SKH53 / M1 | | **AFNOR (France)** | HS1-9-1 (Z85WDCV 09-01-01) | | **GB (China)** | W6Mo5Cr4V2 (A close equivalent, though composition varies slightly) | --- #### **Typical Applications** Tatmo™ M1 is a preferred choice for manufacturing a diverse array of high-performance cutting tools used in various industries: * **Drills:** Twist drills (especially for demanding conditions), core drills, step drills. * **End Mills:** General-purpose and premium end mills for milling steels and alloys. * **Taps & Dies:** For threading operations where a balance of wear and toughness is needed. * **Reamers & Broaches:** Precision finishing tools requiring a keen, durable edge. * **Gear Cutters:** Hobs, shaper cutters, and other gear machining tools. * **Saw Blades:** High-performance hacksaw blades and circular cold saw blades. * **Form Tools & Inserts:** Complex shaped tools for lathes and screw machines. * **Punches & Wear Parts:** For applications requiring a combination of hardness and shock resistance. --- #### **Availability** Latrobe Tatmo™ M1 is supplied in precision-processed forms to ensure optimal microstructure and performance: * **Round Bars** (Forged, Centerless Ground) * **Flat Bars** * **Forged Blanks** (for toolmakers) * **Billets & Forging Stock** --- **Choose Latrobe Tatmo™ ASTM M1 High-Speed Steel** when your application demands a **proven, balanced, and versatile cutting tool material**. Its optimal blend of wear resistance, toughness, and hot hardness makes it an industry-standard choice for extending tool life, improving productivity, and reliably machining a wide range of materials. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Latrobe Tatmo™ ASTM M1 High Speed Steel Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <7146 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Latrobe Tatmo™ ASTM M1 High Speed Steel Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
