As an evolution within the D-series, D5 combines the high-carbon, high-chromium chemistry of grades like D3 with the stability of air hardening. This results in a steel capable of achieving very high hardness with minimal distortion, making it ideal for large, complex, or precision tools subjected to severe abrasive wear. The key advantage of LSS™ D5 lies in its **superior combination of wear resistance, dimensional stability, and through-hardening capability**. Its alloy content promotes a high volume of hard, wear-resistant carbides while the air-hardening nature significantly reduces the risk of distortion and quench cracking compared to oil-hardening grades like D3. --- ### **1. Chemical Composition** The chemical composition of Latrobe LSS™ D5 is balanced to maximize carbide formation and hardenability. | Element | Content (%) | | :--- | :--- | | Carbon (C) | 1.40 - 1.60 | | Chromium (Cr) | 11.00 - 13.00 | | Molybdenum (Mo)| 0.70 - 1.20 | | Cobalt (Co) | 2.50 - 3.50 | | Vanadium (V) | 0.70 - 1.10 | | Manganese (Mn)| 0.60 max | | Silicon (Si) | 0.60 max | | **Balance** | Iron (Fe) | *(Note: Composition represents typical AISI D5 / ASTM A681 ranges. The addition of Cobalt enhances hot hardness and secondary hardening response.)* --- ### **2. Physical & Mechanical Properties** **Typical Properties in the Annealed Condition:** * **Hardness:** ~ 220-255 HB (Brinell) * **Machinability:** Fair to Difficult (approximately 30-40% of a 1% carbon steel standard). Requires rigid setups and appropriate tooling. **Typical Properties in the Hardened & Tempered Condition:** * **Hardening Method:** Air hardening * **Typical Hardening Temperature:** 1000°C - 1040°C (1830°F - 1905°F) * **Tempering Range:** 480°C - 595°C (900°F - 1105°F). Exhibits a strong secondary hardening peak, typically around 510°C - 540°C (950°F - 1000°F). * **Achievable Hardness:** **58 - 64 HRC** (Rockwell C) when tempered in the secondary hardening range. * **Key Characteristics:** * **Exceptional Wear Resistance:** Comparable to D2/D3, with excellent resistance to abrasive and adhesive wear. * **Minimal Distortion:** Air hardening provides superior dimensional stability compared to oil-hardening grades. * **Excellent Deep-Hardening Ability:** Suitable for very large cross-sections. * **Good Hot Hardness:** The cobalt content helps retain hardness at elevated temperatures. * **Moderate Toughness:** Similar to other high-carbide D-series steels; not suited for high-impact applications. --- ### **3. International Standards & Cross-Reference** Latrobe LSS™ D5 is recognized under several international standard designations: * **USA:** AISI D5, ASTM A681 (Grade D5), UNS T30405 * **International:** Commonly referred to by its AISI D5 designation, as direct equivalents in other national standards (like DIN or JIS) are less common than for D2 or D3. It is often the basis for proprietary, cobalt-modified high-wear steels. --- ### **4. Product Applications** Latrobe LSS™ D5 is selected for demanding applications where maximum wear resistance and minimal heat treatment distortion are critical, often in large or intricate tools: * **Large Blanking and Forming Dies:** For long production runs on abrasive materials. * **Thread Rolling Dies and Gear Rolls:** Where high surface hardness and precision are required. * **Shear Blades for Abrasive Materials:** Such as composites, reinforced plastics, and hard papers. * **Precision Gauges and Master Tools:** Requiring extreme dimensional stability and wear life. * **Slitter Knives and Rotary Cutters:** In heavy-duty cutting applications. * **Cold Extrusion Tools and Punches:** For non-ferrous metals and other materials. * **Wear Parts and Guides:** In high-abrasion industrial environments. --- ### **5. Processing Considerations** * **Heat Treatment:** Requires precise control. A double preheat (650°C/1200°F and 850°C/1560°F) is recommended before austenitizing. Air quenching in still air or positive-pressure air is standard. **Deep freezing** (-80°C/-110°F or lower) after quenching is highly recommended to maximize martensite transformation and dimensional stability, followed by **double or triple tempering** within the secondary hardening range. * **Machining & Grinding:** Machining in the annealed condition requires power, rigidity, and sharp carbide tooling. Grindability is poor; use premium wheels, adequate coolant, and light passes to avoid grinding burns and cracks. * **Stress Relieving:** Essential after rough machining and before finishing operations. * **Availability:** Typically supplied in the spheroidize-annealed condition as ground flat stock, bars, or forged blocks. --- ### **6. Technical Comparison** * **vs. D2:** D5 typically contains cobalt and is formulated for deeper hardening and slightly better hot hardness. Both are air-hardening with similar wear resistance. * **vs. D3:** D5 is air-hardening (less distortion) while D3 is oil-hardening. D5 is generally preferred for more complex geometries and larger sections. * **vs. High-Speed Steels (e.g., M2):** D5 offers better wear resistance and compression strength for cold work applications, though M2 has superior hot hardness and can be used for limited cutting applications. --- **Summary:** Latrobe LSS™ D5 represents a high-performance tier within the cold work tool steel family. It is engineered for the most demanding wear applications where the combination of extreme hardness, superior dimensional stability from air hardening, and deep hardenability cannot be compromised. While it demands careful processing and expertise in heat treatment, D5 delivers exceptional service life for critical, long-run tooling in abrasive environments. **Disclaimer:** The information provided is for general reference.
