### **Product Name:** ASTM A285, Grade B
**Classification:** Low to Intermediate Tensile Strength Carbon-Silicon Steel Plate for Pressure Vessels
---
### **1. Overview**
ASTM A285 Grade B is a standard specification for carbon steel plates of low and intermediate tensile strength, designed primarily for fusion-welded pressure vessels. It represents the middle-tier strength level within the ASTM A285 specification, offering a balanced compromise between strength, cost, and weldability. As a general-purpose material commonly supplied in the as-rolled condition, it is widely used for constructing tanks and vessels that operate under moderate pressures and at ambient to slightly elevated temperatures where notch toughness is not a critical design factor.
### **2. Chemical Composition (Weight %, Heat Analysis)**
As specified in ASTM A285/A285M.
| Element | Minimum (%) | Maximum (%) | Notes |
|---------|------------|------------|-------|
| **Carbon (C)** | - | 0.22 | Slightly higher than Grade A for increased strength, but still maintains good weldability. |
| **Manganese (Mn)** | - | 0.90 | Standard level for solid solution strengthening. |
| **Phosphorus (P)** | - | 0.035 | Impurity control for basic toughness. |
| **Sulfur (S)** | - | 0.040 | Impurity control for basic weldability. |
| **Silicon (Si)** | 0.13 | 0.15 | A minimum silicon content is required for Grade B, indicating it is typically **fully killed steel**. This provides a more uniform microstructure than semi-killed Grade A. |
**Key Chemical Distinction:** The mandatory **minimum Silicon (Si) content (0.13%)** is the primary chemical differentiator from Grade A. This ensures the steel is fully deoxidized (killed), resulting in a more homogeneous structure with fewer porosity issues, which is beneficial for integrity.
### **3. Physical & Mechanical Properties**
*Properties are for plates in the as-rolled condition. Thickness range typically up to 2 inches (51 mm).*
**Mechanical Properties (Minimum & Typical):**
* **Tensile Strength (Rm):** 50,000 psi (345 MPa) min
* **Yield Strength (Re, 0.2% offset):** 27,000 psi (185 MPa) min
* **Elongation (A, min):**
* 8 in. (200 mm) Gauge Length: **23%**
* 2 in. (50 mm) Gauge Length: **28%**
* **Hardness (typical):** ~ 120-155 HBW
**Physical Properties (Typical):**
* **Density:** 0.284 lb/in³ (7.85 g/cm³)
* **Modulus of Elasticity:** 29 x 10⁶ psi (200 GPa)
* **Poisson's Ratio:** 0.29
* **Thermal Conductivity:** ~ 50 W/m·K (at 20°C)
* **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion:** ~ 6.5 x 10⁻⁶ /°F (11.7 x 10⁻⁶ /K)
**Critical Note – Impact Properties:** **ASTM A285 does not mandate Charpy V-notch impact testing.** Therefore, Grade B is **not suitable for low-temperature service** where risk of brittle fracture exists unless supplementary impact testing is specially ordered and specified. Its use is generally restricted to temperatures above 32°F (0°C).
### **4. Key Characteristics**
* **Balanced Performance:** Offers a practical balance of higher strength than Grade A while maintaining good fabricability.
* **Improved Homogeneity:** The fully killed nature (due to min. Si) provides a more consistent microstructure with fewer internal discontinuities compared to semi-killed steels, enhancing reliability for pressure containment.
* **Good Weldability:** The carbon content remains moderate, ensuring good weldability with common processes. Pre-heat may be recommended for thicker sections.
* **Cost-Effective Strength:** Provides a measurable increase in allowable design stress over Grade A without a significant cost premium, allowing for weight savings or higher pressure ratings.
* **Formability:** Retains good cold forming and bending characteristics, though slightly less ductile than Grade A due to higher strength.
### **5. Product Applications**
ASTM A285 Grade B is a workhorse material for a broad range of industrial pressure equipment operating under moderate conditions:
* **Pressure Vessels:** Air receivers, steam drums (low-pressure), heat exchanger shells, and separators in general plant service.
* **Storage Tanks:** Field-erected and shop-built tanks for water, fuel oil, and certain non-hazardous chemicals.
* **Process Vessels:** Reactors, columns, and scrubbers in chemical, petrochemical, and food processing industries where service conditions are not severe.
* **Water & Wastewater Treatment Equipment:** Pressure filters, aeration tanks, and clarifiers.
* **Boiler Components:** Non-critical parts in low-pressure boiler systems.
### **6. International Standards & Specifications**
ASTM A285 is a globally recognized standard, with Grade B being one of the most commonly specified grades.
| Region | Standard & Designation | Scope / Notes |
|--------|----------------------|---------------|
| **USA / ASTM** | **ASTM A285/A285M** | Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, Low- and Intermediate-Tensile Strength. **Grades: A, B, C**. |
| **USA / ASME** | **ASME SA-285** | Identical to ASTM A285 when adopted into the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code for construction. |
| **European Union (EU)** | **EN 10028-2** | **P265GH** or **P275GH** are functional equivalents. These are normalized, fully killed steels with specified impact properties, often considered a technical upgrade. |
| **International / ISO** | **ISO 9328-2** | Steel grades such as **P265GH** or **P275GH** provide similar strength with enhanced toughness guarantees. |
| **Japan** | **JIS G3115 SB 410** | Provides similar tensile strength, though chemical requirements and processing may differ. |
### **7. Available Forms & Processing**
* **Standard Forms:** Supplied as **hot-rolled plates**. Common thickness up to 2 in. (51 mm); available in wider and longer sizes for vessel fabrication.
* **Condition:** Primarily supplied in the **as-rolled (AR)** condition. Normalizing or stress relieving can be specified as an additional requirement.
* **Fabrication:**
* **Welding:** Excellent weldability. Standard processes like SMAW (E7018), GMAW, FCAW, and SAW are suitable. Follow qualified Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
* **Forming:** Well-suited for cold bending and rolling. Hot forming is straightforward.
* **Machining:** Good machinability; slightly tougher than Grade A but still easily processed.
### **8. Selection Guidance**
**Choose ASTM A285 Grade B when:**
* A cost-effective, readily available pressure vessel quality plate is needed.
* Design requires higher strength than Grade A but does not justify the cost of notch-tough steels like A516.
* Service conditions are ambient to moderately warm (typically above 32°F/0°C) and non-cyclic.
* The simplicity of as-rolled supply meets fabrication needs.
**Consider an alternative (e.g., ASTM A516 Grade 60/65, EN P275GH) when:**
* Service temperatures are at or below 32°F (0°C).
* The design code, regulatory authority, or application requires guaranteed impact toughness.
* Enhanced reliability through a normalized microstructure is desired for cyclic service.
---
**Disclaimer:** This technical summary is for informational purposes. **ASTM A285 Grade B is not intended for low-temperature or critically lethal service.** For engineering design and fabrication, always adhere to the latest edition of the **ASTM A285/A285M** specification, the governing pressure vessel design code (e.g., ASME BPVC Section VIII), and approved fabrication procedures. Mechanical properties are thickness-dependent; always verify for the specific plate thickness being procured.
