Overview** ASTM A285 is a standard specification for carbon steel plates of low and intermediate tensile strength, intended primarily for fusion-welded pressure vessels. **Grade A** represents the lowest strength level within the A285 specification. It is a general-purpose, cost-effective material designed for applications where moderate strength and good weldability are sufficient, and service conditions are not severe (e.g., moderate temperatures and pressures). It is commonly supplied in the as-rolled (hot-rolled) condition and is a staple material for the fabrication of tanks and vessels in various industrial sectors. ### **2. Chemical Composition (Weight %, Heat Analysis)** As specified in ASTM A285/A285M. | Element | Minimum (%) | Maximum (%) | Notes | |---------|------------|------------|-------| | **Carbon (C)** | - | 0.17 | Low carbon for good formability and weldability. | | **Manganese (Mn)** | - | 0.90 | Standard level for solid solution strengthening. | | **Phosphorus (P)** | - | 0.035 | Impurity control for basic toughness. | | **Sulfur (S)** | - | 0.040 | Impurity control for basic weldability. | | **Silicon (Si)** | - | 0.15 | A deoxidizer; content indicates the steel is typically semi-killed. The Si range for Grade A is lower than for Grades B & C. | **Note:** Grade A has no minimum Si requirement, distinguishing it chemically from the higher grades. It is typically a **semi-killed steel**. ### **3. Physical & Mechanical Properties** *Properties are for plates in the as-rolled condition, up to 2 inches (51 mm) thick.* **Mechanical Properties (Minimum & Typical):** * **Tensile Strength (Rm):** 45,000 psi (310 MPa) min * **Yield Strength (Re, 0.2% offset):** 24,000 psi (165 MPa) min * **Elongation (A, min):** * 8 in. (200 mm) Gauge Length: **25%** * 2 in. (50 mm) Gauge Length: **30%** * **Hardness (typical):** ~ 110-145 HBW **Physical Properties (Typical):** * **Density:** 0.284 lb/in³ (7.85 g/cm³) * **Modulus of Elasticity:** 29 x 10⁶ psi (200 GPa) * **Poisson's Ratio:** 0.29 * **Thermal Conductivity:** ~ 52 W/m·K (at 20°C) * **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion:** ~ 6.5 x 10⁻⁶ /°F (11.7 x 10⁻⁶ /K) from 68-212°F (20-100°C) **Note:** ASTM A285 does not mandate **Charpy V-notch impact testing**. If notch toughness is required, another specification (e.g., ASTM A516) must be selected. ### **4. Key Characteristics** * **Cost-Effectiveness:** One of the most economical pressure vessel quality plates available. * **Good Weldability:** Low carbon content and simple chemistry make it easy to weld using all common processes. Pre-heat is generally not required for thinner sections. * **Adequate Formability:** Can be cold bent and formed with relative ease due to its low strength and good ductility. * **General Purpose Reliability:** Suitable for many non-critical, low-stress applications where extreme low-temperature toughness or high-temperature strength is not required. * **Limitation – Notch Toughness:** **Not suitable for low-temperature service** as it is not impact tested. Its use is typically restricted to temperatures above 32°F (0°C) unless explicitly evaluated. ### **5. Product Applications** Grade A is used in a wide range of low to moderate pressure containment applications: * **Storage Tanks:** Water storage tanks, oil storage tanks, and other non-refrigerated liquid storage vessels. * **Low-Pressure Process Vessels:** Mixing tanks, holding tanks, sedimentation tanks, and air receivers in general industry. * **Heat Exchanger Shells & Channels:** For low-pressure steam or hot water services. * **Structural Components:** When a "pressure vessel quality" (fully killed/deoxidized) plate is specified for non-pressure parts of a vessel. * **Agricultural & Industrial Tanks:** For fertilizers, chemicals (compatible with the material), and other bulk liquids. ### **6. International Standards & Specifications** ASTM A285 is primarily a U.S. standard but is recognized and used globally. | Region | Standard & Designation | Scope / Notes | |--------|----------------------|---------------| | **USA / ASTM** | **ASTM A285/A285M** | Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, Low- and Intermediate-Tensile Strength. **Grade A, B, C**. | | **USA / ASME** | **ASME SA-285** | Identical to ASTM A285 when adopted into the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. The "S" prefix denotes ASME adoption. | | **International / ISO** | **ISO 9328-2** | While not a direct equivalent, steels like **P235GH** (EN 10028-2) or **P245GH** offer comparable strength and are fully killed, normalized, and often have better toughness properties. | | **European Union** | **EN 10028-2** | **P235GH** is a common normalized, fully killed steel with similar strength but guaranteed impact properties, often used as a direct upgrade. | | **Japan** | **JIS G3115 SB 350** | Similar strength class for pressure vessels, though processing may differ. | ### **7. Available Forms & Processing** * **Standard Forms:** Supplied as **hot-rolled plates**. Thickness typically ranges from 3/16 in. (5 mm) to 2 inches (51 mm) for Grade A. * **Condition:** Almost exclusively supplied in the **as-rolled (AR)** condition. Normalizing is not required by the specification. * **Fabrication:** * **Welding:** Excellent weldability. Common processes include SMAW (stick), GMAW (MIG), FCAW (flux-cored), and SAW (submerged arc). Use AWS/ASME SFA 5.1 E7018 or similar electrodes. * **Forming:** Well-suited for cold bending and rolling. Hot forming is also easily performed. * **Machining:** Good machinability due to low hardness. ### **8. Comparison & Selection Considerations** **Choose ASTM A285 Grade A when:** * Designing for low pressure and ambient temperature service. * Cost is a primary driver. * The application does not require guaranteed notch toughness. **Consider an alternative (e.g., ASTM A516 Grade 60/65, EN P235GH) when:** * Service temperatures are near or below freezing (0°C / 32°F). * Higher reliability, normalized structure, or guaranteed impact properties are needed. * The vessel code or customer specification mandates impact testing. --- **Disclaimer:** This datasheet provides general information. **ASTM A285 Grade A is not intended for service at low temperatures or in critically lethal applications.** For engineering and fabrication, always consult the latest edition of the **ASTM A285/A285M** specification, the applicable design code (e.g., ASME BPVC Section VIII), and adhere to qualified Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS). Properties are thickness-dependent; verify for specific plate thickness. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ASTM A285, Grade A Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <7384 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ASTM A285, Grade A Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
