Overview** ASTM A285 Grade C represents the highest strength tier within the ASTM A285 specification for carbon steel pressure vessel plates. Designed for fusion-welded construction, it offers the greatest tensile and yield strength among the A285 grades (A, B, and C), providing an economical option for applications requiring moderate strength under ambient to elevated temperature service. Like its counterparts, it is primarily supplied in the as-rolled condition and is selected for general-purpose pressure containment where notch toughness is not a primary design consideration. Its higher strength allows for reduced plate thickness in some designs compared to Grades A and B. ### **2. Chemical Composition (Weight %, Heat Analysis)** As specified in ASTM A285/A285M. | Element | Minimum (%) | Maximum (%) | Notes | |---------|------------|------------|-------| | **Carbon (C)** | - | 0.28 | The highest carbon content among A285 grades, providing increased strength through solid solution and pearlite content. Weldability requires more care. | | **Manganese (Mn)** | - | 0.90 | Standard level for solid solution strengthening. | | **Phosphorus (P)** | - | 0.035 | Impurity control for basic toughness. | | **Sulfur (S)** | - | 0.040 | Impurity control for basic weldability. | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.13 | 0.15 | Mandatory minimum silicon content ensures Grade C is a **fully killed steel**, promoting a homogeneous and sound microstructure. | **Key Chemical Distinction:** The **maximum Carbon (C) content of 0.28%** is the primary differentiator, giving Grade C its higher strength. The mandatory minimum Silicon ensures it is a fully deoxidized steel. ### **3. Physical & Mechanical Properties** *Properties are for plates in the as-rolled condition. Thickness range typically up to 2 inches (51 mm).* **Mechanical Properties (Minimum & Typical):** * **Tensile Strength (Rm):** 55,000 psi (380 MPa) min * **Yield Strength (Re, 0.2% offset):** 30,000 psi (205 MPa) min * **Elongation (A, min):** * 8 in. (200 mm) Gauge Length: **21%** * 2 in. (50 mm) Gauge Length: **26%** * **Hardness (typical):** ~ 130-170 HBW **Physical Properties (Typical):** * **Density:** 0.284 lb/in³ (7.85 g/cm³) * **Modulus of Elasticity:** 29 x 10⁶ psi (200 GPa) * **Poisson's Ratio:** 0.29 * **Thermal Conductivity:** ~ 48 W/m·K (at 20°C) * **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion:** ~ 6.5 x 10⁻⁶ /°F (11.7 x 10⁻⁶ /K) **Critical Note – Impact Properties:** **ASTM A285 does not mandate Charpy V-notch impact testing.** Consequently, Grade C is **not suitable for low-temperature service** and is generally restricted to temperatures above 32°F (0°C) unless supplementary impact testing is explicitly specified. Its higher carbon content can also make it more susceptible to brittle fracture if misapplied. ### **4. Key Characteristics** * **Highest Strength in A285 Family:** Provides the maximum allowable design stress among the A285 grades, enabling thinner, lighter vessel walls for a given pressure rating compared to Grades A and B. * **Fully Killed Steel:** The minimum silicon requirement ensures a uniform, dense microstructure with minimal porosity, which is beneficial for pressure integrity. * **Economical Strength Option:** Offers a cost-effective alternative to normalized or alloy steels when the higher strength of Grade C is sufficient and notch toughness is not required. * **Good Formability (with consideration):** Can be cold formed, but its higher strength and carbon content may require more force and attention to minimum bend radii to avoid cracking. * **Weldability (Requires Care):** The higher carbon content increases the carbon equivalent (CE), raising the risk of hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) and hard heat-affected zones (HAZ). Proper welding procedures, including pre-heat and the use of low-hydrogen electrodes, are essential. ### **5. Product Applications** ASTM A285 Grade C is used in pressure vessels and tanks where its higher strength provides a direct economic or design advantage: * **Pressure Vessels:** For moderate pressure service in chemical processing, oil & gas (upstream/midstream), and power generation, such as separators, scrubbers, and accumulators. * **Storage Tanks:** For products where higher strength allows for larger diameters or higher fill heights without excessive wall thickness (e.g., large water storage tanks, certain chemical tanks). * **Heat Exchanger Shells:** For shell-and-tube exchangers operating at moderate pressures and temperatures. * **Boiler Components:** Certain non-code or low-pressure boiler parts where higher strength is beneficial. * **Industrial Plumbing:** Thick-walled headers and pressure piping. ### **6. International Standards & Specifications** | Region | Standard & Designation | Scope / Notes | |--------|----------------------|---------------| | **USA / ASTM** | **ASTM A285/A285M** | Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, Low- and Intermediate-Tensile Strength. **Grades: A, B, C**. | | **USA / ASME** | **ASME SA-285** | Identical to ASTM A285 when adopted into the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. | | **European Union (EU)** | **EN 10028-2** | **P275GH** or **P295GH** are the closest functional equivalents. These are normalized, fine-grain steels with guaranteed impact properties, offering better overall performance. | | **International / ISO** | **ISO 9328-2** | Steel grades such as **P275GH** or **P295GH** provide similar or higher strength with enhanced toughness. | | **Japan** | **JIS G3115 SB 450** | Offers comparable tensile strength, though specifications differ. | ### **7. Available Forms & Processing** * **Standard Forms:** Supplied as **hot-rolled plates**. * **Condition:** Primarily in the **as-rolled (AR)** condition. Normalizing or stress relieving can be specified as an additional requirement to improve properties or relieve fabrication stresses. * **Fabrication:** * **Welding:** **Requires controlled procedures.** Use low-hydrogen processes (SMAW with E7018, FCAW-G, SAW). Pre-heat of 150°F-300°F (65°C-150°C) is often recommended, especially for thicker sections. Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) may be beneficial. * **Forming:** Hot forming is preferred for severe bends. Cold forming is possible but requires verification that mechanical properties are not adversely affected. * **Machining:** Acceptable machinability; tool wear may be slightly higher than for lower carbon grades. ### **8. Selection Guidance** **Choose ASTM A285 Grade C when:** * The highest strength within the economical A285 family is required. * Service is at ambient to moderately elevated temperatures (consistently > 32°F / 0°C). * The design prioritizes material cost savings over guaranteed notch toughness. * Proper welding procedures can be implemented and verified. **Consider an alternative (e.g., ASTM A516 Grade 65/70, EN P295GH) when:** * Service temperatures approach or fall below freezing. * The vessel is subject to cyclic loading or shock. * Code, regulation, or customer specification mandates impact testing. * Enhanced weldability and a normalized microstructure are desired for fabrication ease and reliability. --- **Disclaimer:** This datasheet is for informational purposes. **ASTM A285 Grade C is not intended for low-temperature or critically lethal service.** Its higher carbon content necessitates careful fabrication, particularly welding. For all engineering and fabrication activities, strict adherence to the latest **ASTM A285/A285M** specification, the applicable pressure vessel design code (e.g., ASME BPVC Section VIII), and qualified Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) is mandatory.
