Overview** ASTM A542/A542M is a specification for **quenched and tempered, high-strength, chromium-molybdenum alloy steel plates** with **tungsten and vanadium additions**, specifically designed for **heavy-wall pressure vessels** operating at **elevated temperatures**. Unlike the more common 2.25Cr-1Mo steels (e.g., A387 Gr.22), A542 steels offer significantly **higher strength at elevated temperatures** and **superior creep-rupture strength**. They are engineered for the most demanding applications where standard Cr-Mo steels are inadequate, such as in modern, high-efficiency power plants and severe petrochemical processes. The specification covers several classes (Types) distinguished by chemical composition and mechanical property requirements. --- ### **2. International Standards** * **Primary Standard:** * **ASTM A542/A542M:** *Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Alloy Steel, Quenched-and-Tempered, Chromium-Molybdenum-Tungsten.* This is the defining specification. * **ASME SA-542:** The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) adoption, making it the mandatory specification for code construction (ASME Section VIII, Div. 1 & 2). * **Key Types/Classes & International Equivalents:** The standard defines multiple Types (e.g., Type A, B, C, D, E) and Classes (based on strength level). A commonly referenced high-performance grade is **Type D, Class 4a/4b**, which approximates the advanced **3Cr-1.5Mo-W-V-B** steel. * **EN 10028-2 13CrMoV9-10 / 1.7759:** A similar European plate grade, though not a direct 1:1 equivalent. * **JIS G4109 SCMV 29:** Japanese standard for Cr-Mo-V steel plates for pressure vessels. * This material is often paired with product forms governed by **ASTM A336** (forgings) and **ASTM A213/A335** (tubes/pipes) for corresponding grades. --- ### **3. Chemical Composition (Weight %, Representative for Type D)** The advanced alloying is key to its superior high-temperature performance. | Element | Typical Range (Type D) | Role & Benefit | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.10 – 0.15 | Base strength; balanced for weldability and toughness. | | **Manganese (Mn)**| 0.30 – 0.60 | Enhances hardenability and strength. | | **Phosphorus (P)**| ≤ 0.015 | Very low impurity control for enhanced toughness. | | **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.010 | Very low impurity control for improved transverse properties. | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.10 – 0.35 | Deoxidizer. | | **Chromium (Cr)** | 2.75 – 3.25 | **Primary alloy.** Provides oxidation/corrosion resistance and solid solution strengthening. Higher than A387 Gr.22. | | **Molybdenum (Mo)**| 1.00 – 1.30 | **Primary alloy.** Enhances high-temperature strength and creep resistance. | | **Vanadium (V)** | 0.20 – 0.30 | **Key microalloy.** Forms stable carbides, providing significant **secondary hardening** during tempering and dramatically improving **long-term creep strength**. | | **Tungsten (W)** | 0.40 – 0.70* | **Key alloy.** (In Type D). Adds solid solution strengthening and further improves high-temperature stability. | | **Boron (B)** | 0.001 – 0.003* | (In Type D). Trace addition to markedly increase hardenability in heavy sections. | *(*) Note: Tungsten and Boron are characteristic of advanced grades like Type D.* --- ### **4. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (Representative for Type D, Class 4)** * **Tensile Strength:** 620 - 795 MPa (90,000 - 115,000 psi) *[Class 4 typical range]* * **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** ≥ 515 MPa (75,000 psi) *[Minimum for Class 4]* * **Elongation (% in 50mm):** ≥ 16% *[Minimum]* * **Hardness:** Typically 210 - 250 HB in quenched & tempered condition. * **Density:** ~ 7.87 g/cm³. * **Modulus of Elasticity:** ~ 200 GPa at room temperature. * **Thermal Conductivity:** Slightly lower than standard Cr-Mo steels due to higher alloy content, ~ 35 W/m·K (at 100°C). * **Critical High-Temperature Performance:** * **Maximum Service Temperature:** Suitable for sustained operation up to **~625°C (1150°F)**. * **Superior Creep Strength:** Its principal advantage is **outstanding creep and stress-rupture resistance** at temperatures above 550°C (1022°F), far exceeding that of 2.25Cr-1Mo steels. * **Oxidation Resistance:** Better than lower chromium grades due to ~3% Cr content. --- ### **5. Product Application** A542 steels are reserved for the most critical, high-parameter components where failure is not an option. * **Advanced Ultra-Supercritical (USC) & Supercritical Power Plants:** * **High-Pressure Steam Drums and Headers** (for the hottest sections). * **Main Steam Lines and Piping.** * **Turbine Casing Components.** * **Petrochemical & Hydroprocessing:** * **Heavy-Wall Reactors** for severe hydrocracking and hydrotreating service, especially where **very high hydrogen partial pressures and temperatures** exceed the limits of standard 2.25Cr-1Mo steels. * **Hot High-Pressure Separators.** * **Synthesis & Ammonia Plants:** For critical high-temperature/pressure vessels. --- ### **6. Key Features & Advantages** * **Exceptional Creep-Rupture Strength:** The primary reason for selection. The V, W, and Mo combination provides unmatched long-term load-bearing capability at temperatures above 550°C. * **High Design Strength:** Allows for **thinner vessel walls** compared to lower-strength materials at the same pressure, reducing weight, material cost, and thermal stress. * **Enhanced Hydrogen Resistance:** The higher alloy content provides better resistance to high-temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA) under more severe conditions than Grade 22. * **Heavy-Section Hardenability:** Boron addition ensures uniform through-thickness properties in very thick plates (often > 150mm). * **Required Condition:** Supplied in the **quenched and tempered (Q&T)** condition, which is essential to develop its full suite of high-strength and toughness properties. --- **In summary, ASTM A542/A542M represents the pinnacle of conventional quenched & tempered alloy steel plate technology for pressure vessels. It is a specialized, high-performance material selected for extreme service conditions—particularly where superior elevated temperature strength and creep resistance are paramount—enabling advanced, efficient, and reliable designs in power generation and petrochemical processing.** -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ASTM A542/A542M Alloy Steel, Chromium Molybdenum Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <7013 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ASTM A542/A542M Alloy Steel, Chromium Molybdenum Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
