### **Product Introduction: Crucible CPM® 10V® (AISI A11) Tool Steel**
Crucible CPM 10V is a premium high-carbon, high-vanadium particle metallurgy (PM) tool steel renowned for its exceptional wear resistance, ranking among the highest of all commercial tool steels. Developed by Crucible Industries using the patented Crucible Particle Metallurgy (CPM) process, it offers a unique combination of extreme abrasion resistance and good toughness, far superior to conventional high-speed steels and D2-type tool steels.
The CPM process creates a fine, uniform microstructure with a homogeneous distribution of large, hard vanadium carbides. This eliminates the coarse carbide segregation found in ingot-cast steels, resulting in improved grindability, dimensional stability during heat treatment, and enhanced mechanical properties in all directions. CPM 10V is the material of choice for demanding applications where wear is the primary failure mode.

### **1. Chemical Composition (Weight %)**
The high vanadium and carbon content is the key to its legendary wear resistance.
| **Element** | **Carbon (C)** | **Chromium (Cr)** | **Vanadium (V)** | **Molybdenum (Mo)** | **Silicon (Si)** | **Manganese (Mn)** |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Content** | 2.45 | 5.25 | 9.75 | 1.30 | 0.90 | 0.50 |
| **Role** | Forms hard carbides with vanadium and chromium. Provides high hardness. | Enhances hardenability, wear resistance, and provides moderate corrosion resistance. | Primary wear-resistant element. Forms extremely hard, stable VC carbides. | Increases hardenability, hot hardness, and tempering resistance. | Deoxidizer, improves strength. | Improves hardenability. |
*Note: Iron (Fe) constitutes the remainder.*

### **2. Physical & Mechanical Properties**
*Typical properties at room temperature after proper heat treatment to 60 HRC.*
* **Density:** 7.81 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³)
* **Modulus of Elasticity:** 215 GPa (31.2 x 10⁶ psi)
* **Thermal Conductivity:** Relatively low, approximately 20.0 W/m·K at 20°C.
* **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion:** 10.2 x 10⁻⁶/°C (20-200°C)
* **Hardness (Typical Working Range):** **58 - 64 HRC**. Most commonly used at **60-62 HRC** for optimal wear/toughness balance.
* **Abrasion Resistance (ASTM G65):** Extremely high, typically 3-5 times better than D2 and significantly better than M2 high-speed steel.
* **Toughness:** Good for its wear resistance level, but lower than less alloyed steels like D2 or A2. The CPM process provides more consistent toughness.
* **Dimensional Stability:** Excellent during heat treatment due to the fine PM microstructure.
---
### **3. Heat Treatment**
* **Annealing:** Heat to 870°C (1600°F), slow cool. Typical annealed hardness: 240-280 HB.
* **Stress Relieving (After Rough Machining):** 650-675°C (1200-1250°F), then slow cool.
* **Preheating:** **Critical.** Double preheat: First at 540-650°C (1000-1200°F), then at 815-870°C (1500-1600°F).
* **Austenitizing:** 1120-1175°C (2050-2150°F). **Note:** Higher austenitizing temperatures increase wear resistance but reduce toughness.
* **Quenching:** Air quench (thick sections) or positive pressure/quench gas. Oil quenching is possible for very thick sections but not typically recommended.
* **Tempering:** **Mandatory.** Temper immediately after quenching to 50-55°C (90-100°F) below the target tempering temperature. Minimum of **two tempers**, each for 2 hours. Typical tempering range: 540-595°C (1000-1100°F) for 60-62 HRC.
---
### **4. Key Applications**
CPM 10V is used where extreme wear is the dominant concern.
* **Metalworking:** Punches, dies, and rolls for forming or cutting abrasive materials (stainless steel, high-strength alloys, copper alloys).
* **Pulp & Paper Industry:** Doctor blades, refiner plates, wear plates.
* **Plastics & Extrusion:** Wear-resistant components, screws, barrels for filled/reinforced plastics (e.g., fiberglass, minerals).
* **Food Processing:** Wear plates, cutting blades for abrasive food products.
* **Mining & Wear Parts:** Shot blast nozzles, wear liners, slitter knives for abrasive materials.
* **Knife Industry:** High-end industrial blades and premium custom/hard-use knives requiring maximum edge retention.
---
### **5. International Standards & Cross-References**
CPM 10V is a proprietary grade. The closest analogous standards are:
* **UNS:** T30410
* **AISI:** A11 (AISI classifies it as a "High-Carbon High-Vanadium Tool Steel")
* **European (EN):** No direct equivalent. Roughly falls between 1.9-2.3C, 4.8-5.5Cr, 8.5-10V grades.
* **Japanese (JIS):** No direct equivalent.
* **Common Trade Names:** Often referred to simply as "10V" or "A11" in the industry.
*Important Note:* CPM 10V should not be confused with **CPM 10V (AISI A11)**, which is the correct designation. "10V" may sometimes be used generically, but the CPM process is integral to its performance.
---
### **6. Advantages & Limitations**
**Advantages:**
* **Unmatched Wear/Abrasion Resistance:** Best-in-class for tool steels.
* **Good Combination of Wear & Toughness:** Superior to cast high-vanadium alloys.
* **Excellent Grindability & Machinability (Annealed):** Better than conventional high-vanadium steels due to uniform microstructure.
* **Superior Dimensional Stability:** During heat treatment.
**Limitations:**
* **Lower Toughness than D2/A2:** Not suitable for high-impact applications.
* **Difficult to Machine in Hardened State:** Requires carbide or CBN tooling.
* **Lower Corrosion Resistance:** Not a stainless grade; requires protection from moisture.
* **Higher Cost:** Due to high alloy content and PM manufacturing process.
---
**In summary, Crucible CPM 10V represents the pinnacle of wear-resistant tool steel technology.** Its unique PM microstructure delivers performance unattainable by conventional ingot steels, making it the definitive solution for the most severe abrasive wear applications across multiple industries.
