### **Product Introduction: Crucible CPM® 15V® Tool Steel**
Crucible CPM 15V stands as the ultimate high-vanadium, particle metallurgy tool steel, engineered for **maximum possible wear resistance** within the realm of hardenable steels. It represents the pinnacle of Crucible Industries’ CPM (Crucible Particle Metallurgy) technology, pushing the vanadium and carbon content to extreme levels to achieve abrasion resistance that rivals and often surpasses that of cemented carbides (tungsten carbide), while retaining the machinability, toughness, and heat-treatability of steel.
The CPM process is essential for this grade. It allows for an exceptionally high volume fraction of extremely hard vanadium carbides (VC) to be uniformly distributed in a fine, stable matrix. This microstructure delivers unparalleled protection against abrasive, adhesive, and erosive wear. CPM 15V is the specialist’s choice for the most severe wear applications where other high-performance tool steels like CPM 10V are no longer sufficient.

### **1. Chemical Composition (Weight %)**
The composition is dominated by carbon and vanadium to form a massive volume of wear-resistant carbides.
| **Element** | **Carbon (C)** | **Chromium (Cr)** | **Vanadium (V)** | **Molybdenum (Mo)** | **Silicon (Si)** | **Manganese (Mn)** |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Content** | 3.40 | 5.25 | 14.50 | 1.30 | 0.90 | 0.50 |
| **Role** | Partners with vanadium to form a very high volume of ultra-hard vanadium carbides (VC). | Provides hardenability, contributes secondary carbides, and offers mild corrosion resistance. | **Primary element.** Forms an enormous amount of extremely hard VC carbides (up to ~20% volume). This is the source of its legendary wear resistance. | Enhances hardenability and tempering resistance. | Deoxidizer and strengthens the matrix. | Aids in hardenability during heat treatment. |
*Note: Iron (Fe) constitutes the remainder.*
---
### **2. Physical & Mechanical Properties**
*Typical properties at room temperature after proper heat treatment to ~62-64 HRC.*
* **Density:** 7.71 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³) *Slightly lower than most steels due to high carbide volume.*
* **Modulus of Elasticity:** ~215 GPa (31.2 x 10⁶ psi) *Similar to other tool steels.*
* **Thermal Conductivity:** Low, due to the high volume of carbide phases.
* **Hardness (Typical Working Range):** **58 - 66 HRC.** Most commonly applied at **60-64 HRC**. Achievable hardness is highly dependent on austenitizing temperature.
* **Abrasion Resistance (ASTM G65):** **Exceptional.** Typically 30-50% higher than CPM 10V, and several times better than conventional D2 or M2 steels. It approaches the wear resistance of some grades of cemented carbide.
* **Toughness:** **Low.** This is the primary trade-off for its extreme wear resistance. It has significantly lower impact toughness than CPM 10V or D2 and is unsuitable for any application involving shock or high tensile stress.
* **Compressive Strength:** Very high, making it excellent for wear surfaces under high pressure.
* **Grindability (Hardened):** Very difficult. Requires diamond or CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) abrasive wheels.
---
### **3. Heat Treatment**
Heat treating CPM 15V is critical and requires precise control, especially during austenitizing.
* **Annealing:** Heat to 870°C (1600°F), slow cool. Typical annealed hardness: 300-350 HB.
* **Stress Relieving (After Rough Machining):** 650-675°C (1200-1250°F), then slow cool.
* **Preheating:** **Absolutely Essential.** Double preheat strongly recommended: First at 540-650°C (1000-1200°F), then at 815-870°C (1500-1600°F).
* **Austenitizing:** 1010-1150°C (1850-2100°F). **Critical Note:** Temperature selection is a key performance trade-off:
* **Lower Range (1010-1065°C / 1850-1950°F):** Results in higher toughness but lower wear resistance and lower achievable hardness (~58-60 HRC).
* **Higher Range (1095-1150°C / 2000-2100°F):** Maximizes wear resistance and final hardness (up to 66 HRC) but results in **very low toughness**. **1075-1120°C (1975-2050°F) is the most common industrial range.**
* **Quenching:** Air quench or positive pressure gas. **Do not oil quench.**
* **Tempering:** **Mandatory.** Temper **immediately** after quenching. Minimum of **two tempers**, each for 2 hours, sometimes three tempers are recommended. Typical tempering range: 525-560°C (975-1050°F). Avoid the 370-425°C (700-800°F) range due to secondary hardness peaks that can cause embrittlement.
---
### **4. Key Applications**
CPM 15V is used in the most demanding, purely abrasive environments where wear is the sole or overwhelming failure mechanism.
* **Metalforming & Powder Compaction:** Punches, dies, and core rods for compacting highly abrasive metal powders (e.g., ferrites, tungsten carbide).
* **Extrusion & Pelletizing:** Wear plates, liners, and dies for extruding filled plastics, ceramics, or fertilizer.
* **Abrasive Material Processing:** Knives, blades, and wear parts for cutting fiberglass, carbon fiber, composites, paper, and gaskets.
* **Slurry & Erosion Applications:** Pump sleeves, seals, and nozzles handling abrasive slurries.
* **Specialty Knives:** Used in very niche, high-end custom knives where extreme edge retention for cutting abrasive materials (e.g., cardboard, rope) is the only priority, with no side-loading or impact.
---
### **5. International Standards & Cross-References**
CPM 15V is a proprietary, ultra-high-alloy grade with no direct international standard equivalents.
* **UNS:** No standardized UNS designation. It is often referred to by its proprietary name.
* **AISI/SAE:** No direct equivalent. It is a "super" high-vanadium tool steel beyond the standard AISI classifications.
* **European (EN) / Japanese (JIS):** No direct equivalents.
* **Common Reference:** Often called simply "15V" in industry and knifemaking circles.
---
### **6. Advantages & Limitations**
**Advantages:**
* **Unrivaled Wear Resistance:** The highest among all commercially available tool steels.
* **Cemented Carbide Alternative:** Provides wear resistance close to carbide but can be machined (in annealed state) and heat-treated like steel.
* **Excellent Dimensional Stability:** The CPM process ensures minimal distortion during hardening.
**Limitations & Cautions:**
* **Very Low Toughness:** **The primary limitation.** It is brittle and sensitive to notches. Unsuitable for high-stress, impact, or bending applications.
* **Difficult & Specialized Machining/Grinding:** Requires carbide tooling for machining in annealed state and diamond/CBN for grinding after hardening.
* **Critical & Precise Heat Treatment Required:** Incorrect austenitizing or tempering can lead to catastrophic brittleness or inadequate performance.
* **High Cost:** Due to extremely high alloy content and specialized PM manufacturing.
---
**In summary, Crucible CPM 15V is the definitive choice for combating the most extreme abrasive wear.** It is a specialized, "no-compromise" material where wear is the absolute dominant factor and where the component can be designed to operate purely in compression or with minimal tensile/shock loading. Its successful application hinges on respecting its exceptional properties and its inherent brittleness.
