It is a particle metallurgy (PM) version of the classic AISI M4 grade, but with a crucial enhancement: a significantly higher carbon content compared to standard M4. This "high-carbon" formulation, made feasible by the Crucible Particle Metallurgy (CPM) process, dramatically increases the volume of hard, wear-resistant carbides (primarily vanadium carbides) in the microstructure. The result is a tool steel that delivers an extraordinary balance of three key properties: **superior wear resistance (approaching that of CPM 10V), excellent high-temperature hardness (red hardness) characteristic of high-speed steels, and significantly better toughness than high-vanadium grades like 10V or 15V.** CPM REX M4 HC is engineered for the most demanding cutting and forming applications where tools are pushed to their limits. --- ### **1. Chemical Composition (Weight %)** The elevated carbon content is the defining characteristic that differentiates it from standard M4. | **Element** | **Carbon (C)** | **Tungsten (W)** | **Molybdenum (Mo)** | **Chromium (Cr)** | **Vanadium (V)** | **Cobalt (Co)** | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Content** | **1.35** (HC) | 5.75 | 4.50 | 4.25 | 4.00 | - | | **Role** | **Key Differentiator.** Increased carbon allows for more vanadium and molybdenum carbide formation, boosting wear resistance without sacrificing red hardness. | Provides hot hardness and wear resistance. Forms stable carbides. | Enhances hardenability, hot hardness, and counters temper softening. Similar effect to tungsten but more efficient. | Provides deep hardenability, wear resistance, and some oxidation resistance. | Forms extremely hard, fine vanadium carbides (VC) for exceptional abrasion resistance. | Not present in standard HC grade. Some special variants may include it for even higher hot hardness. | *Note: Standard CPM M4 has ~1.30% C. The HC variant is typically ~1.35-1.40% C. Iron (Fe) constitutes the remainder.* --- ### **2. Physical & Mechanical Properties** *Typical properties at room temperature after proper heat treatment to 63-65 HRC.* * **Density:** 8.10 g/cm³ (0.292 lb/in³) * **Modulus of Elasticity:** ~215 GPa (31.2 x 10⁶ psi) * **Thermal Conductivity:** Moderate for a HSS. Higher than high-vanadium steels like 10V. * **Hot Hardness (Red Hardness):** Excellent. Can maintain a high hardness (above 60 HRC) at temperatures exceeding 540°C (1000°F), a hallmark of molybdenum-tungsten high-speed steels. * **Hardness (Typical Working Range):** **62 - 66 HRC.** Commonly used at **63-65 HRC**. * **Abrasion Resistance:** **Very High.** Significantly better than conventional M2 or M42 HSS, and comparable to or slightly better than D2. Approaches the lower range of CPM 10V. * **Toughness:** **Good for its wear resistance level.** It possesses substantially higher toughness and resistance to chipping than CPM 10V, making it far more suitable for cutting tools and applications with intermittent stress. * **Grindability:** Fair to difficult. Better than CPM 10V due to a different carbide type/distribution, but requires aluminum oxide or CBN wheels. --- ### **3. Heat Treatment** Heat treatment is critical to unlocking the full potential of CPM REX M4 HC. * **Annealing:** Heat to 870-900°C (1600-1650°F), slow cool. Typical annealed hardness: 240-280 HB. * **Stress Relieving:** 650-675°C (1200-1250°F), then slow cool. * **Preheating:** **Essential.** Double preheat: First at 540-650°C (1000-1200°F), then at 815-870°C (1500-1600°F). * **Austenitizing:** 1175-1225°C (2150-2240°F). Higher temperatures maximize hot hardness and wear resistance but reduce toughness. * **Quenching:** Air quench, positive pressure gas quenching, or salt bath quenching. Oil quenching can be used for complex shapes but increases distortion risk. * **Tempering:** **Mandatory Multiple Tempers.** Temper immediately after quenching. **Minimum of three tempers**, each for 2 hours, is standard practice. Typical tempering range: 540-595°C (1000-1100°F). A noticeable secondary hardening peak occurs, increasing hardness after the first temper. * **Sub-Zero Treatment:** Often recommended between quenching and tempering to transform retained austenite, improving dimensional stability and final hardness. --- ### **4. Key Applications** CPM REX M4 HC is the material of choice for severe applications requiring a balance of wear resistance, toughness, and hot hardness. * **High-Performance Cutting Tools:** Broaches, gear hobs, milling cutters, end mills, and form tools for machining difficult-to-cut materials (e.g., high-temperature alloys, stainless steels, abrasive composites). * **Punches and Dies:** For cold work applications on abrasive materials, such as stamping high-strength steel, silicon steel laminations, or non-ferrous alloys. * **Roll Forming & Thread Rolling:** Rolls for forming hard or abrasive wires and rods. * **Precision Knives:** Industrial blades for slitting, shearing, or cutting abrasive materials like carbon fiber, plastics, and paper where edge integrity under heat is critical. * **Woodworking Tools:** Premium planer knives and router bits for processed or abrasive woods. --- ### **5. International Standards & Cross-References** It is fundamentally a high-carbon variant of the standard AISI M4 grade. * **AISI/SAE:** M4 (High Carbon variant). Often designated as **M4 HC** or **M4 HS**. * **UNS:** T11304 (shared with standard M4, carbon range may vary). * **European (EN):** HS 2-9-2-5 / **1.3344** (The composition is very close, but the exact carbon content of 1.35% may be at the top end of the range). * **Japanese (JIS):** SKH54 (SKH54 typically has a slightly different W/Mo balance but is a close functional equivalent). * **ISO:** HS2-9-2. * **Common Trade Names:** CPM M4 HC, REX M4 HS, "Super M4". --- ### **6. Advantages & Limitations** **Advantages:** * **Optimal Balance:** Arguably the best practical balance of wear resistance, toughness, and hot hardness among high-alloy tool steels. * **Superior to Standard M4:** The increased carbon content provides a clear jump in wear resistance without major sacrifices. * **Excellent for Cutting Tools:** Its combination of red hardness and toughness makes it ideal for demanding machining operations where tools experience heat and shock. * **CPM Benefits:** Uniform microstructure ensures consistent performance, better grindability, and improved dimensional stability. **Limitations:** * **Moderate Corrosion Resistance:** Not a stainless steel; requires protection from moisture. * **Heat Treatment Complexity:** Requires precise, high-temperature austenitizing and multiple tempers for optimal performance. * **Cost:** Higher than conventional HSS and tool steels due to alloy content and PM processing. * **Not the Ultimate in Any Single Property:** While balanced, it does not match the pure wear resistance of CPM 15V nor the toughness of lower-alloy steels. --- **In summary, Crucible CPM REX M4 HC/HS is a premium, balanced-performance high-speed steel designed for the most challenging industrial applications.** It is the go-to material when a tool must simultaneously resist abrasion, withstand high operating temperatures, and survive the mechanical shocks of interrupted cutting or forming. Its "high-carbon" formulation via PM technology makes it a direct upgrade over traditional M4 for severe service conditions. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Crucible Steel CPM® Rex M4 HC(HS) Tool Steel Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <6951 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Crucible Steel CPM® Rex M4 HC(HS) Tool Steel Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
