Renowned for its outstanding balance of **high wear resistance, excellent red hardness, and good toughness**, it sets the benchmark for performance in a vast array of demanding metal-cutting applications. The "Double Six" name is synonymous with its ability to consistently achieve and maintain a hardened state of 66 HRC, the hallmark of top-tier cutting efficiency and durability. --- #### **Key Features & Benefits** * **Optimal Balanced Properties:** Offers the best all-around combination of wear resistance (from high carbon and vanadium), hot hardness, and reasonable toughness, making it the default choice for countless tool types. * **Superior Wear Resistance & Edge Retention:** The higher vanadium content compared to M1 provides significantly improved resistance to abrasive wear, leading to longer tool life and consistent performance in demanding cuts. * **Excellent Red Hardness:** Retains a hard cutting edge at operating temperatures up to approximately **540-565°C (1000-1050°F)**, enabling higher cutting speeds and feeds than tool steels. * **High Hardness Capability:** Can be reliably heat-treated to achieve a working hardness of **64-66 HRC**, providing a very keen and durable cutting edge. * **Proven Versatility:** The most universally applicable HSS grade, effective on a wide spectrum of materials including carbon steels, alloy steels, tool steels, cast iron, and certain non-ferrous alloys. --- #### **Chemical Composition (Typical %, ASTM A600 M2 High Carbon)** | Element | Carbon (C) | Tungsten (W) | Molybdenum (Mo) | Chromium (Cr) | Vanadium (V) | Cobalt (Co) | | :--- | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | | **Content** | 0.85 - 0.95 | 5.90 - 6.70 | 4.70 - 5.20 | 3.80 - 4.50 | 1.75 - 2.05 | - | *(Note: Double Six™ M2 is a non-cobalt grade. Standard M2 is also available with a lower carbon (~0.82%) and vanadium (~1.75%) content; the "High Carbon / High Vanadium" variant listed here offers superior abrasion resistance.)* *This classic composition creates a dense matrix of hard, wear-resistant carbides (primarily vanadium carbides VC and molybdenum/tungsten carbides) that provide the signature cutting performance.* --- #### **Physical & Mechanical Properties** * **Density:** ~8.16 g/cm³ * **Thermal Conductivity:** Relatively low, characteristic of HSS, concentrating heat at the chip-tool interface. * **Hardness (Heat Treated):** Standard working hardness is **64-66 HRC**. * **Red Hardness:** Maintains cutting capability at sustained temperatures of **~540°C (1000°F)**. * **Abrasion Resistance:** Very high, due to the significant volume of hard vanadium carbides. Superior to M1 and M7 grades. * **Toughness:** Good for its hardness level, though generally lower than M1 or M7. Adequate for most continuous and light-interrupted cutting operations. --- #### **Heat Treatment** * **Annealing:** Heat to 850-870°C (1560-1600°F), slow cool. Typical annealed hardness: **215-240 HB**. * **Hardening (Austenitizing):** Requires careful preheating. Austenitize at **1200-1230°C (2190-2245°F)** followed by quenching in oil, salt, or air. * **Tempering:** **Essential double or triple tempering** is required. Temper within the range of **540-595°C (1000-1105°F)**. Each cycle should last at least 2 hours. Peak hardness (66 HRC) is typically achieved after tempering at **540-565°C (1000-1050°F)**. Avoid tempering in the 205-425°C (400-800°F) range. --- #### **International Standards & Equivalent Grades** Latrobe Double Six™ M2 conforms to and is recognized under the following major international specifications: | Standard | Grade Designation | | :--- | :--- | | **ASTM (USA)** | A600 M2 (UNS T11302) | | **ISO (International)** | HS6-5-2 (ISO 4957) | | **DIN (Germany)** | 1.3343 / S 6-5-2 | | **W-Nr. (Germany)** | 1.3343 | | **JIS (Japan)** | SKH51 / M2 | | **AFNOR (France)** | HS6-5-2 (Z85WDCV 06-05-04-02) | | **GB (China)** | W6Mo5Cr4V2 (A very close equivalent) | | **UNS** | T11302 | --- #### **Typical Applications** Double Six™ M2 is the fundamental material for manufacturing a vast majority of high-performance, industrial-grade cutting tools: * **Drills:** High-speed twist drills, step drills, and core drills for general and heavy-duty machining. * **End Mills:** A wide variety of general-purpose and high-performance end mills, including roughing and finishing mills. * **Taps & Dies:** The most common material for commercial and industrial-grade taps, especially for through-hole threading. * **Reamers & Broaches:** Precision finishing tools where sharpness and wear resistance are critical. * **Gear Cutters:** Hobs, shaper cutters, and shaving cutters for gear manufacturing. * **Saw Blades:** High-speed steel bandsaw blades and circular cold saw blades. * **Tool Bits & Inserts:** Single-point lathe tools, form tools, and inserts for planers and shapers. * **Milling Cutters:** Side-and-face cutters, slab mills, and gear milling cutters. --- #### **Availability** Latrobe Double Six™ M2 is supplied in various forms to meet rigorous toolmaking standards: * **Round Bars** (Forged, Centerless Ground, Peeled) * **Flat Bars & Squares** * **Precision Ground Flat Stock** * **Forged Blanks** (for custom tool shapes) * **Wire & Strip** (for specific applications like saw blades) --- **Choose Latrobe Double Six™ ASTM M2 High-Speed Steel** as the **proven, reliable, and high-performance foundation** for your cutting tool inventory. Its unmatched balance of properties has made it the global industry standard, ensuring extended tool life, increased productivity, and cost-effective machining across a unparalleled range of materials and operations. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Latrobe Double Six™ ASTM M2 High Speed Steel Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <7147 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Latrobe Double Six™ ASTM M2 High Speed Steel Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
