As an **air-hardening, ultra-high carbon, high-chromium grade**, it is specifically engineered to provide **maximum abrasive wear resistance** under extreme service conditions. D7 contains the highest carbon and vanadium content in its class, producing an exceptionally high volume of hard, wear-resistant carbides. This steel is designed for applications where extreme longevity and resistance to galling and abrasion are paramount, even at the expense of impact toughness. The primary advantage of LSS™ D7 lies in its **unmatched resistance to abrasive wear** under high-pressure conditions. While similar in many respects to other air-hardening D-series steels, its specialized chemistry pushes the boundaries of carbide volume and hardness potential, making it suitable for the most punishing cold work applications. --- ### **1. Chemical Composition** The chemical composition of Latrobe LSS™ D7 is optimized to maximize carbide formation for ultimate wear resistance. | Element | Content (%) | | :--- | :--- | | Carbon (C) | 2.15 - 2.50 | | Chromium (Cr) | 11.50 - 13.50 | | Molybdenum (Mo)| 0.70 - 1.20 | | Vanadium (V) | 3.80 - 4.40 | | Manganese (Mn)| 0.60 max | | Silicon (Si) | 0.60 max | | **Balance** | Iron (Fe) | *(Note: This represents the typical AISI D7 / ASTM A681 composition. The exceptionally high carbon and vanadium content defines the grade's extreme performance characteristics.)* --- ### **2. Physical & Mechanical Properties** **Typical Properties in the Annealed Condition:** * **Hardness:** ~ 230-260 HB (Brinell) * **Machinability:** Difficult (approximately 20-30% of a 1% carbon steel standard). Requires powerful equipment, rigid setups, and premium carbide tooling. * **Grindability:** Very Poor. High carbide volume and hardness make grinding challenging and require specialized procedures. **Typical Properties in the Hardened & Tempered Condition:** * **Hardening Method:** Air hardening * **Typical Hardening Temperature:** 1025°C - 1065°C (1875°F - 1950°F) * **Tempering Range:** 480°C - 595°C (900°F - 1105°F). Like other high-alloy steels, it exhibits a secondary hardening response. * **Achievable Hardness:** **60 - 66 HRC** (Rockwell C), capable of reaching some of the highest hardness levels among standard cold work tool steels. * **Key Characteristics:** * **Extreme Wear Resistance:** Unmatched abrasion resistance due to very high carbide volume. * **Excellent Dimensional Stability:** Air hardening minimizes distortion and stress. * **Good Compression Strength:** Performs well under high pressure. * **Limited Toughness:** The high carbide volume significantly reduces impact resistance. **Not suitable for any application involving shock loading.** * **Fair Corrosion Resistance:** Similar to other high-chromium grades. --- ### **3. International Standards & Cross-Reference** Latrobe LSS™ D7 conforms to major international standards, though it is a more specialized grade than D2 or D3. * **USA:** AISI D7, ASTM A681 (Grade D7), UNS T30407 * **Germany:** While not a direct 1:1 match, it is functionally similar to modified versions of DIN 1.2379 with very high vanadium. * **International:** Often specified by its AISI D7 designation. It is the basis for many proprietary ultra-high-wear formulations globally. --- ### **4. Product Applications** Latrobe LSS™ D7 is reserved for the most demanding, non-impact wear applications where tool life is the single most critical factor: * **Extreme-Wear Blanking and Punching Dies:** For highly abrasive materials like fiberglass, graphite, composites, e-glass, and sandpaper. * **Ceramic and Powder Metal Forming Tools:** Where abrasion is extreme. * **Thread Rolling Dies for Hard Materials:** Providing exceptionally long service life. * **Burnishing Tools and Rolls:** Where a hard, wear-resistant surface is essential. * **Slitter Knives for Abrasive Non-Metallics:** Such as certain plastics and carbon fibers. * **Wear Plates and Guides in Severe Environments:** Such as in the mining or mineral processing industries. * **Precision Gauges and Tools:** Subjected to constant abrasive contact. --- ### **5. Processing Considerations** * **Heat Treatment:** Requires expert handling. A double preheat cycle is essential. Due to its high alloy content, correct austenitizing temperature and time are critical to dissolve sufficient carbides without causing grain growth. **Deep freezing** after air quenching is **highly recommended** to ensure maximum transformation to martensite and achieve full hardness. This must be followed by **multiple tempering cycles** (typically double or triple tempering). * **Machining:** Should only be performed in the fully annealed condition. Requires low speeds, high rigidity, and sharp, positive-rake carbide tools. Pre-hardened machining is not typical for this grade. * **Grinding:** A major challenge. Use soft-grade, porous wheels (aluminum oxide or seeded gel), abundant coolant, and light, frequent passes to avoid thermal cracking and checking. * **Stress Relieving:** Mandatory after rough machining and before any finishing operations. * **Availability:** Typically supplied in annealed condition as ground flat stock or custom forgings. --- ### **6. Technical Comparison** * **vs. D2/D3:** D7 provides substantially greater wear resistance due to its higher carbon and very high vanadium content, but with significantly lower toughness and more difficult machinability/grindability. * **vs. Powdered Metal (PM) Tool Steels:** D7 approaches the wear resistance of some PM grades (like CPM 10V or CPM 15V) but is produced via conventional ingot metallurgy. PM steels often offer better toughness and grindability at similar wear levels. * **General Use:** D7 is a **specialist grade**. D2 or A2 are preferred for general high-wear applications, while D7 is selected only when those grades prove insufficient. --- **Summary:** Latrobe LSS™ D7 is the ultimate choice for pure, severe, abrasive wear in cold work tooling. It sacrifices toughness and ease of fabrication to deliver what is arguably the highest level of wear resistance available in a standard AISI cold work tool steel. Its use is justified only in the most extreme applications where tool longevity under abrasion outweighs all other considerations, and where skilled heat treatment and toolmaking practices are assured. **Disclaimer:** The information provided is for reference purposes. Processing D7 successfully requires specialized expertise.
